Maeve Jenkinson (violin) Maeve has many years’ experience as a professional musician, having been a member of the first violins of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and worked with world class ensembles such as I Solisti Veneti and the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields. As a student Maeve held a Foundation Scholarship and was awarded top prize for violin at the Royal College of Music, where she studied with Jaroslav Vanacek. She subsequently was awarded scholarships from the Royal Society of Arts, and Countess of Munster Musical Trust to study in the USA with Josef Gingold, and a Fellowship to study at the Aspen Music Festival with Paul Kantor. She was described by Josef Gingold as "one of the finest violinists I have taught". She has a busy schedule as senior violin teacher and ensemble coach at East Sussex Academy of Music, also teaching at Moira House School, and privately. She is first violinist of the Ludlay String Quartet, plays duo recitals with pianist Rachel Fryer, performs regularly with the London Philharmonic, and is Musical Director of the Corelli Ensemble. In 2014 she formed Seaford in Harmony, a Community Interest Company which has recently delivered a highly successful cross-curricular arts project in collaboration with Seaford Head School. The aim of the project is to foster a life long love of music and the arts in young people. After graduating from the British Suzuki Institute training course she spent time in Japan studying with the great pedagogue Dr Shinichi Suzuki and on her return completed an MA in Music Education at London University. Spending much of her time playing and coaching chamber music, Sarah co-ordinates the Junior course of MusicWorks and performs with the Corelli Ensemble. Sarah teaches regularly at the Suzuki teacher training courses based in London and Edinburgh. Former pupils have successfully gained places at Wells Cathedral School, The Purcell School, The Menuhin School, Royal College of Music, Royal Academy of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Trinity College, and the Royal Northern College of Music. Simon Smith (Violin) is a full time Violin and Viola teacher for ESMS and joined the team back in 2008. Having studied at both the University of Hull and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama he is up to date with life as a music student as well as the pros and cons of different institutions. Simon is an active musician in the local area and is the current leader of the Eastbourne Concert Orchestra. He can specialise in all levels and styles of music and welcomes academy students into the East Sussex Electric Violin Ensemble. Outside of the music service Simon enjoys going to the theatre and bespoke cake making! Stephen Giles (Viola) grew up in Kent and studied viola with Marguerite Wilkinson at the junior department of the Royal College of Music. Roger Bigley was his teacher whilst he studied for a B Mus at Manchester University, then he furthered his studies on viola with Roger Best whilst a student at the National Centre for Orchestral Studies in London. Since then Stephen has worked as a viola player in many fields: chamber music, ballet, opera, film, TV and in chamber and symphony orchestras such as City of London Sinfonia and London Concert Orchestra. Since 2000 he has taught violin and viola for East Sussex Music Service as a member of its string team. He also takes responsibility for tutoring violas in East Sussex String Chamber Orchestra, South Downs Youth Orchestra and Handel String Orchestra, which he also conducts. Occasionally, Stephen also finds time to nurture his allotment. Joe Giddey (Cello) is a freelance cellist who plays with many varied ensembles, working with orchestras, quartets, string ensembles, bands and recording sessions for film and television. Orchestral work includes Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, Opera Holland Park, and New English Concert Orchestra. Joe has recorded for film work and theatre work, including 'Gospel of Us' with the National Theatre, 'Backbeat' West End show, string quartet music for Warner Bros and recently recording for Sony Playstation game music and the 'Last Reef' film in 3D. Joe is also involved with many chamber ensembles, including the Montpellier Cello Quartet. They have recently embarked on a partnership with jazz vocalist Claire Martin OBE in a sound fusion of jazz-chamber music written for the ensemble by internationally renowned musicians and composers, including Richard Rodney Bennett, Mark Anthony Turnage, Joe Stilgoe and Django Bates. Malcolm Warnes (Trumpet Tutor/Conductor) Following a music foundation course at Leeds College of Music, Malcolm went on to study at University College of North Wales, where he studied composition with William Mathias. He then completed a Masters Degree at Edinburgh University and worked with contemporary music groups throughout Scotland as a composer and trumpet player. He took up a teaching post with East Sussex Music Service in 1986, and in addition to teaching trumpet, ran a very successful course for young composers for several years. As a conductor, he has directed many music centre ensembles, the South Downs Youth Concert Band, the East Sussex Wind Orchestra, and he has been the conductor of South Downs Youth Orchestra since 2003. As well as directing Music Service ensembles at venues across East Sussex, he has conducted at the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and St John’s Smith Square in London. Paul Richards (Guitar) performs all over the UK and abroad, giving solo guitar recitals spanning Latin, classical and jazz genres, playing in a wide range of duos and bands and also his successful Latin trio dazzling audiences at Jazz clubs and festivals. Paul is responsible for setting up and organising the “Brunswick Jazz Jam” at The Brunswick venue in Hove which has been running for over 5 years now. It’s the most successful Jazz night in Brighton with the venue packed to capacity every Tuesday night. The Paul Richards Trio is very popular and in high demand at international Jazz festivals such as Love Supreme Festival, Rye International Jazz festival and more. He also works as a session guitarist and has recorded for many singers and instrumentalists. Paul set up Sussex Jazz Guitar School - a monthly in depth group class for jazz guitarists, using his skills both as an experienced performer and qualified and experienced school teacher to pass on his knowledge. He teaches whole class music, guitar, bass and ukelele for Brighton Music and Arts (music service) in many local secondary and junior schools. Paul is a highly respected teacher and offers guitar lessons in the Brighton & Hove area. He tutors a range of students. He is a trained teacher holding a PGCE teaching certificate and Qualified teacher status (QTS) from class teaching. Paul teaches A level & BTEC guitar students at East Sussex Academy of Music (ESAM) at Sussex Downs College, Lewes and has worked for the local council music services (Brighton & Hove, East Sussex & West Sussex) teaching whole class music, guitar and bass lessons in many local schools. Paul is a guest lecturer at Brighton jazz school and also runs Sussex Jazz Guitar School. More information on paulrichardsguitar.com Fiona Wallace-Carville (vocals) - Originally trained as a classical singer, Fiona has sung most genres in performance, from folk and jazz through to heavy rock, as well as opera, musicals and choral. She currently teaches for ESAM, at various schools and at Bonners Music but also teaches private students at home in Eastbourne. She uses the basics of classical singing training to teach all students how to improve their vocal abilities, no matter which genre they wish to sing. Lessons also include microphone techniques and recording and layering vocals through Mac computer.
