ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance is essential for student achievement and success. State law
requires school attendance for all children between the ages of seven (7) and
sixteen (16). Parents must ensure that students attend and remain in school daily.
We will maintain accurate attendance information and will share this information
with parents when attendance becomes a problem. It is extremely important for
parents and students to closely monitor and document all school absences.
Excessive absences will have serious academic consequences and may result in
grade-level retention.
Excused Absences
An absence is excused if one or more of the following conditions exists:
 Illness or injury
 Quarantine
 Death in the immediate family
 Medical or dental appointments
 Court or administrative proceedings
 Religious observances
 Participation in a valid educational opportunity, such as travel with prior
approval, as documented on the “Request for Excused Absence for
Educational Reasons” form. Educational absence forms are available in the
front office. This form must be completed and approved by administration
before the absence occurs. PRIOR APPROVAL IS REQUIRED; SEE MRS.
HARDIN FOR MORE INFORMATION.
Following an absence from school, students must present a note from a
parent/guardian to his/her classroom teacher. The note must include:





Student’s first and last name
Date(s) absent
Reason for absences
Parent/Guardian signature
Home, work and/or cell phone numbers
Notes should be submitted within three (3) days of the student’s return to school.
Failure to comply will result in the absence being classified as UNEXCUSED.
3
Absence reason codes will not be changed/updated after that time unless a
doctor’s note is provided.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
Unexcused Absence Actions:
3 Unexcused Absences
3-day letter
6 Unexcused Absences
6-day letter mailed home, phone call, conference
with parents, or home visit by counselor,
administration, or truancy officer.
10 Unexcused Absences
10-day letter mailed home, conference with
parents or home visit by counselor, administration,
or truancy officer. A petition with the court may
be filed at this time.
Once a student has reached a large number of absences, excused or unexcused,
the school reserves the right to require a doctor’s note to excuse any future
absences. Again, children cannot learn when they are not in school!
For more detailed information refer to the Granville County Schools Board of
Education policy regarding attendance at http://www.gcs.k12.nc.us and click on the
School Board link.
TARDY
POLICY
TARDY POLICY
Regular and punctual school attendance is one of the most critical factors in a
student’s academic success. All students who arrive after 7:35 AM are considered
tardy. Tardy students should be escorted to the office and signed in by an adult
to receive a tardy pass before going to the classroom. Tardies are considered
unexcused unless the student brings in documentation from a morning appointment.
Students who arrive on late buses will not be counted tardy.
4
Students who miss more than half of an instructional day will be counted absent
for the day. For example, students who leave school before 11:00AM will be
counted absent for the day, and students who arrive at school after 11:00AM will
be counted absent for the day.
To qualify for a Perfect Attendance Award for the year, a student must have
no more than 5 tardies and no absences.
EARLY DEPARTURE/CHECK-OUT
Early departures should be kept to a minimum! The instructional day ends when
the bell rings or dismissed by administration. Student checkouts after 2:15 pm are
discouraged due to traffic congestion and dismissal procedures. Unless a student
has a medical appointment, there is no need to disrupt the instructional day. If a
student must be checked out early, the parent/guardian must come to the office,
sign his/her child out, and wait for the office staff to call the child to the office.
Teachers have been instructed not to release children from the classroom until
they have heard from the office staff.
Students who return to school after checking out should check back in at the Main
Office before going to class.
Anyone who the office staff does not personally recognize as being the
parent/guardian of a student may be required to show picture identification
before being allowed to pick up the student.
Parent/Guardian written permission is required for a student to leave school
grounds with anyone other than the parents or guardians. In the event that your
child’s transportation needs to be changed, the office must be notified by 1:30 pm.
**PARENTS/GUARDIANS MAY NOT GO DIRECTLY TO THE
CLASSROOM TO PICK UP THEIR CHILD!**
5
SCHOOL BUSES
The first concern of the Transportation Department is to transport each student
to and from school safely. In order to provide a safe bus ride every day, students
must take their responsibility for following bus safety and proper conduct rules
seriously . All students are expected to follow all bus and school rules all of the
time. Remember, riding the school bus is a privilege, not a right.
Student School Bus Safety Rules:
 Be at the bus stop on time. Busses cannot wait for students.
 Always stay off of roadways while waiting for the bus.
 Let the bus stop completely before approaching the door to get on or off
the bus.
 Wait for the bus driver’s permission to leave the bus. Once you get off the
bus, do not stop to pick up something you drop. Do not run back to get on
the bus again.
 Always enter and leave the bus by the front door, except in cases of
emergency.
 Only cross the road in front of the bus once the bus’ stop sign and gate are
extended. Be sure to look both ways!
Students will be picked up and allowed to depart only at their designated bus stops.
A parent/guardian’s written request is required for a student to ride home on a
different bus. The student must present the request to his/her classroom
teacher. The teacher will present the request to the assistant principal or
principal for approval. After checking with the bus driver about the availability of
a seat for an additional rider, parents will be notified if their request is not
approved.
Bus Behavior Rules:
 Follow all directions of the bus driver.
 Stay seated at all times while facing forward with your back against the seat
and your feet under the seat in front of you.
6









Keep your feet out of the aisle.
Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
Keep all body parts inside the bus. Do not stick your head, hands, or feet
out of the window.
Talk softly.
No eating, drinking, or chewing gum allowed.
Keep all belongings inside of your book bag.
Leave toys and electronics, i.e. Game Boys, MP3 players, basketballs,
footballs, sports equipment, etc., at home.
Large objects may not be transported.
Remember that the bus stops are an extension of the school. School and
bus rules apply at the bus stops too.

school (see page 3 of this handbook).
CAR RIDERS

Supervision will be provided for students eating breakfast in the cafeteria
beginning at 7:05 AM. Car riders eating breakfast need to arrive by 7:15 am.

Students not eating breakfast will be supervised in the gym beginning at 7:05 AM.
DO NOT DROP OFF STUDENTS BEFORE THE ABOVE SUPERVISED TIMES!
DOORS WILL REMAIN LOCKED UNTIL 7:05.

Dismissal begins at 2:30.
CARPOOL PROCEDURES:
 Follow all directions of staff members on duty.
 Drop off and pick up students at the main entrance of the building only. Do not pull
pass the cafeteria or behind the cafeteria to drop students off.
 Drive up to the first available loading zone along the curb. Staff members will be
there to direct you. We can unload or load five cars at a time when everyone
cooperates.
 The carpool line is a “Kiss & Go” and “Pick Up & Go” Zone. Please handle all other
business at another time, i.e. sign papers, give lunch money, or let children finish
eating before you arrive at school in the morning. Choose another time to talk with
your child’s teacher.
8
 Please do not park in the carpool line along the curb. This stops the flow of
traffic.
 If you need to come into the school, park your car in a parking space designated for
visitors. These spaces are marked in yellow with a “V” in front of the school. If
those spaces are filled, proceed to the bus lot. Wait for instructions from staff
members on duty before crossing. Please use the crosswalk for safety.
Parents may not enter the staff parking lot or bus lot to drop off or pick up students.
NEVER DRIVE THROUGH THE BUS LOT WHILE STUDENTS ARE THERE!!
AFTER-SCHOOL CARE
The Community Schools’ Department of the Granville County School System provides after
school care for students. Fees apply.
The After-School Program does not operate when school is closed for inclement weather.
In the event school is closed early due to inclement weather, the After-School Program
will not operate. Parents who enroll their child(ren) in the After-School Program should
make prior arrangements either for their child(ren) to either ride the bus home or be
picked up immediately following dismissal.
CAFETERIA PROCEDURES
Time spent in the cafeteria presents an opportunity for social interaction and relaxation
along with the chance for students to “refuel” to carry out afternoon learning experiences.
However, because constant movement and activity take place in the cafeteria; the
assistance, cooperation, and support of all staff and students is required to ensure that it
is a safe and orderly environment.
Please take time to review the following behavior expectations for students in the
cafeteria.

Students are to enter the cafeteria without talking and in a single file line.
9




Once students reach the door of the kitchen, they may no longer talk to one
another. This will enable the cafeteria workers to hear the students.
Students are to use their words to order lunch instead of pointing to their
selections.
Students are to practice good manners by saying “please” and “thank you” when
ordering.
Individuals who choose not to follow the posted cafeteria rules will receive a verbal
warning. If the behavior persists, the student will be asked to complete a lunch
refocus form. Continued misbehavior will result in silent lunch, a phone call home,
and loss of lunchroom privileges such as “free seat” Fridays.
Students may purchase breakfast in the cafeteria from 7:05-7:30 daily. Full price
breakfast is $1.00; reduced price breakfast is $0.30. Milk is $0.50 and juice is $0.40.
Full price lunch is $2.10; reduced price lunch is $0.40. Students who do not have money to
buy lunch will be provided a peanut butter sandwich and juice. A la cart pricing and other
information can be found on the Lunch Menu link on our school’s website.
Parents can conveniently prepay for meals, track student purchases, and be notified of low
balance by using the www.lunchprepay.com website. You will need your child’s NC Wise
student number, which can be obtained from the school office personnel.
COURT ORDERS
COURT ORDERS
Notify your child’s teacher if you have a court order regarding your child. If a child is to
be picked up only by a custodial parent, a copy of the court order must be on file in the
school office.

publication at the beginning of the school year.
The administrators and staff of CES are committed to providing a safe and orderly
learning environment that promotes academic and social growth for all students. We
believe that high expectations for student conduct promote high academic achievement
and socially acceptable behavior. Therefore, our expectations for student behavior on
campus, buses, bus stops, and field trips are governed but the Granville County Schools
Code of Student Conduct, which we strictly enforce. (Refer to the Granville County
Schools Code of Student Conduct booklet for a detailed explanation of rules.)
Every staff member is responsible for every child and each will be involved in teaching the

Education (Policy Code 1710/4021/7230). Consequently, we will not tolerate harassment
and bullying of students or adults. A description of the NC law and Granville County School
policy is located in a link on our school’s webpage.
HOMEWORK
Granville County Board of Education has adopted the following resolution on homework:
18
We believe that homework is an essential part of the educational process. The
assigning and evaluation of homework is the instructional responsibility of the
individual teacher. The satisfactory completion of the assignment is the
responsibility of the student. It is the responsibility of the parent to lend support
to the student and the teacher in carrying out this instructional activity. Teachers
are expected to give lesson assignments each night. Time needed to complete the
assignments will vary according to the grade level and ability of the students.
Teachers are allowed 24 hours to provide missed homework assignments to parents.
Creedmoor Elementary School believes that homework helps students become responsible,
self-directed learners, and improves student achievement.
Reading is part of homework every night. Make sure your child reads 20 minutes per night.
Reading aloud to your child is also encouraged. Studies show that students who are read
to become much better readers!
Please ensure your student(s) complete homework assignments daily.
HEALTH AND WELL BEING
In order for us to provide a learning environment that is healthy and safe, the following
countywide health policies and practices need to be maintained:
COMMUNICABLE DISEASE PREVENTION AND CONTROL
Students are excluded from school in cases of communicable disease. When a student is
suspected of having one of the following diseases, it is the responsibility of the parent to
take the child to their health care provider for verification and treatment before he/she
can return to school.






Chicken Pox: Student is excluded from school until ALL blisters have formed scabs.
Ringworm: Student is excluded from school until treatment is started.
Scabies: Student is excluded from school until one treatment with prescription
medication is completed.
Pink Eye: Student is excluded from school until 24 hours after appropriate
treatment has started.
Impetigo: Student is excluded from school until appropriate treatment has started.
Fifths Disease: Children with Fifth’s Disease should not be excluded from school
since they are not contagious once the rash occurs. Note: Pregnant women in
19
contact with an infected child between three days and two weeks before the rash
should speak with their doctor.
FEVER
Although variations occur, an elevation of the body’s temperature to 100.5 degrees
Fahrenheit (37.7C) or above is generally considered fever and a possible sign of illness.
Therefore, parent/guardian should be contacted to take student home under the following
conditions:
1. Temperature of 100.5 degrees or higher.
2. Temperature of 100 degrees or higher when accompanied by other indicators of
beginning illness, such as:

Anyone, regardless of socioeconomic status, can get head lice. Head lice are passed from
person to person by direct contact or on shared objects (combs, towels, etc.). Dogs, cats,
and other pets do not play a role in the spread of human lice. Students found to have head
lice will be sent home immediately for treatment. When returning back to school, students
will be checked again and re-checked within a week. To keep this problem under control,
parents should conduct periodic checks at home. The school should be notified if lice are
found.
MEDICATION
All medication --prescribed and over-the-counter medication-- should not be administered
by any school personnel under any circumstances unless authorized in writing by the health
care provider. Those individuals administering medicine must complete training each year.
At no time will the school supply medication for students (e.g. Tylenol). Medication must
be supplied by the parent and kept in a locked cabinet. All medication bottles shall be
properly labeled with the student’s name, name of the medication, dosage, how
administered, time administered, and physician’s name for prescribed medication. The
school office must have on file a School Medication Form completed by the physician
and signed by a parent before any medication can be administered. Forms can be
obtained in the school office or online at Granville County School’s Website.
Dental Screening
As a part of our regular school preventive program, the NC Oral Health Screening, Division
of Public Health may conduct dental screening for children in grades K and 5.

The lost and found box is located in the office. All found items should be turned in to the
office. Items may be claimed during regular school hours. Every two weeks, unclaimed
items will be donated to a charitable organization.
MEDIA CENTER
The media enter is open for students to check out books daily. Students must return the
books that they have checked-our before they may check out additional books. Students
are to treat all books and audio-visual materials with care. Parents must pay for any lost
or damaged books and materials to reinstate their child’s borrowing privileges. This will be
in effect until all debts are paid.
PARENT ASSISTANT
Parent Assistant allows parents and students to access student information via any
Internet connection at work or at home. Parent Assistant uses web access to serve the
family and improve the effectiveness of the communication between teachers and parents.
It is your choice as a parent if you choose to use this tool; however, this tool does not take
the place of direct contact with teachers and staff at the school who work with your child
each day.
You will be able to view the following types of data on your child:

CUSTODIAL PARENTS
Parent Assistant gives custodial parents the ability to request changes online for certain
Demographic and Emergency Contact information for their children. If you are the
custodial parent and live at the same address as your child/children, you will need only one
User ID and Password to access the data on your child/children. In order to receive a
Parent Assistant User ID and Password you will need to do the following:
1.
Have one of the following CURRENT VALID PICTURE IDs:
a. NC Driver License
b. DMV Picture ID
c.
Credit Union Picture ID
d. Passport
2. Take this current valid picture ID to the school where one of your children
attends
3. Ask to speak with the NC WISE Data Manager
The person you speak with will use your ID to validate the data against the data on your
child in NC WISE and if it is valid they will give you a document for you to sign that
contains your Parent Assistant User ID and Password.
PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled throughout the school year. They provide an
opportunity for you to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss his/her academic
achievement.
If you wish to have a conference with your child’s teacher, please make an appointment at
least 24 hours in advance, if possible. Conferences must be scheduled either before or
after school to avoid interrupting instructional time.
Your child(ren) will benefit most when the home and school maintain open lines of
communication. Please leave a message at the main office for your child’s teacher if you
have concerns about what is happening at school. Teachers have been instructed to
respond to parent/guardian messages in a timely manner. If an emergency arises, please
contact the Principal or Assistant Principal to intervene until a parent-teacher conference
can be scheduled.
23
Parents are not to go directly to the classroom to talk with a teacher during the
instructional day. As in any profession, an appointment may be made.
PARTIES
The Granville County Board of Education admonishes schools to keep parties to a minimum
during the school year. At no time may schools interrupt instruction for birthday parties.
If parents bring cupcakes for their child’s birthday, they should be consumed during
lunchtime or snack time so that instructional time is not lost. Reminder: Any food
brought to school for consumption by students must be store-bought.
PTA
Creedmoor Elementary is supported by a proud, active Parent-Teacher Association. All
parents are invited and encouraged to join the PTA and get involved in its activities.
Meeting dates and times to be announced.
SEVERE WEATHER
In case of snow, sleet, or other hazardous weather conditions, announcements regarding
school closing and delays will be made on local radio and television stations. Granville
County Schools will also send an automated phone message to notify parents when
inclement weather causes a change in the regular school day. Parents may also check the
Granville County Schools’ website at www.gcs.k12.nc.us.
The After-School Program does not operate when school is closed for inclement weather.
In the event school is closed early due to inclement weather, the After-School Program
will not operate. Parents must make prior arrangements for students to ride the bus home
or pick up students immediately following dismissal.
SNACKS
24
Please provide healthy snacks such as fruit, 100% fruit juice, cheese, veggies, graham
crackers, or other nutritious foods for students to bring to school. Students may not
consume soft drinks as part of their snack or lunch at school.
TELEPHONES
The office telephone is a business phone and should only be used by students in emergency
situations. In our effort to keep instructional interruptions minimal and reinforce
responsibility, students will not be permitted to call home for any reason (i.e. forgotten
homework, PE shoes, library book). Only in the case of illness, injury or emergencies will a
child be permitted to use the phone.
VISITORS AND VOLUNTEERS
All visitors and volunteers must enter at the main entrance of the school, report to the
office, and sign in on the computer where a visitor badge will be generated. Visitor badges
must be worn during your visit on campus. “Pop in” visits are not allowed. Parents must
make an appointment with the teacher. Although we enjoy having you come and eat lunch
with your child, during breakfast we ask that no parents eat in the cafeteria. This is the
beginning of fostering independence in your child and the start of an academic school day.
Also, we do not need any other people in the cafeteria due to the large number of students
eating breakfast.
All volunteers must have a current background check done through Granville County
Schools and passed the background check before contact with students takes place.
Background check forms are available in the front office.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO A WONDERFUL YEAR!!!!
