Job Description
Title: Minister of Music
Reports to: Lead Pastor
Status: Part-Time (30 hours a week)
Purpose:
St. Andrew Lutheran Church is a thriving ELCA congregation seeking a skilled Minister of Music
to develop and lead the worship, music, and the arts (WMA) ministry for our church. We are a
Reconciling in Christ congregation and “We are people of God called to proclaim, serve, and
nurture through the Good News of Jesus Christ.” We have a beautiful Paul Fritts organ, a
Steinway grand piano, an active choir and a lot of untapped musical talent in our congregation.
St. Andrew is located in Beaverton, a diverse suburb of Portland, Oregon, offering numerous
arts and cultural opportunities as well as the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
The Minister of Music will work in consultation with the pastors and other team members to
advance our mission, values, and theology. In particular, the successful candidate will increase
the capabilities of worship through:
1. Seeking and listening for God’s word in worship design that is pleasing to God;
2. Working with a team to plan creative music and worship rooted in Scriptures;
3. Promoting diverse music that encourages participation and meditation while honoring
our Lutheran tradition;
4. Ensuring heartfelt worship services that demonstrate excellence from leadership;
5. Creating spiritual fellowship amongst worship leaders and targeted spiritual support for
this team.
Responsibilities:
Play a central role in creation of the vision of worship:
 Participate in Spirit-based growth and discovery of WMA team that ultimately selects and
plans worship and music for Sunday and other services.
 Facilitate worship planning committee(s).
 Maintain a strong prayer and spiritual base for WMA ministry.
 Participate in the life and ministry of the church.
Direct the sanctuary choir:
 Select repertoire for the choir
 Rehearse the choir and provide vocal training
 Direct the choir during services
Develop ensembles and individuals within St. Andrew and within the Synod to participate in
music, worship and the arts
 Identify, schedule and rehearse musicians including choirs, small chamber ensembles,
bell choir, soloists and other.
 Communicate clear vision for cantors, to include training and rehearsal.
 Identify team to lead children’s choir, drums, or other styles to promote and support
worship.
 Interact with other synod-based churches to share musicians and worship styles.
 Participate in ongoing education and practice through conferences, workshops, and
trainings that are related to the position.
Qualifications:






Ability to organize, coordinate, and motivate worship members.
Strong team player with staff and congregation.
Committed to the church's vision, leadership, and people.
Dependable, responsible, self-motivated and creative.
Bachelors degree in Music or Theology, or equivalent experience (Masters or PhD
preferred).
Five years of experience in church-related setting preferred.
Musical Competencies:





Experience conducting choirs and ensembles.
Musical ability in wide range of styles including Lutheran liturgy, classic hymns, classical
music, contemporary worship, jazz, and other styles.
Ability to lead worship and to train others as individual and team worship leaders.
Professional quality playing skills for tracker organ (preferred), and piano/keyboard.
Vocalist or guitar player a plus.
Composing, arranging and writing music.
Salary and benefits: $30,000 – $40,000 (depending on experience) with benefits, annual
continuing education funding, vacation starting at two weeks a year, and a prayer support team.
