--------------------------------------------------------------** 1. Locks of Love Hair Drive **
--------------------------------------------------------------On Wednesday, May 2, 2007, Artists for Social Change hosted the
4th Annual Locks of Love Hair Drive. The tradition started with
Truc Nguyen’s idea of having a UMBC Locks of Love Hair Drive. An
R.A. at the time, she worked super-hard to make her vision become
a reality.
She has been pivotal in making the event great ever
since!
This year we incorporated a “number system” in which people
signed in and received a number on a heart. At last year’s event
(See Issue 2.3) we had 59 hair donations. This year, the number
jumped up to 71! Thanks to all those who came out to donate
their hair!! Thanks also to the hairdressers from Hair Cuttery®
who volunteered their time (practically the whole day) to give
donors beautiful complimentary haircuts/styles!
The event was featured in the school newspaper! Check out the
following website for an account written by a hair donor,
Elizabeth Silberholz.

Pictures from the 2007 event can be seen in the “Photo Album”
section of the artistsforsocialchange.org website. While only 6”
of hair was required in order to donate, some males and females
shaved their heads so that they could donate all of their hair!

--------------------------------------------------------------** 2. Awards Ceremony **
--------------------------------------------------------------Officers of the Artists for Social Change Club were invited to
attend the 2007 Retriever Black and Gold Awards on May 7th at 6
p.m. in the Commons Skylight Room. This event, sponsored by the
UMBC Office of Student Life, honors organizations and individuals
alike for their contributions to UMBC, be it through service,
academic excellence or entertainment.
The Artists for Social Change Club was nominated for the
“Emerging Group of the Year” and “Commitment to Service” awards.
The description read about the first award given, that of
“Commitment to Service,” included art workshops and a Locks of
Love Hair Drive. We felt thrilled to realize that we had won it!
Below is the picture of the trophy. Thanks to all Artist for
Social Change volunteers who helped us earn this wonderful
distinction!
You can check out all nominees/winners honored in this event at

--------------------------------------------------------------** 3. Quote to Ponder **
--------------------------------------------------------------Artist William Dobell said
“A sincere artist is not one who makes a faithful attempt to put
on to canvas what is in front of him, but one who tries to create
something which is, in itself, a living thing.”
When I think of my favorite painting, I see just that- life.
It’s a painting of a man who, in real life, probably did not look
exactly the way he does on the canvas (unless Goya happened to
paint people who all looked rather similar). Whether or not the
painting resembles its subject is of no importance. The feelings
and spiritual contemplation the painting elicits is what makes it
my all-time favorite. I construe “life” to mean “anything that
makes you think,” so quite clearly, dead objects can be full of
life if they spark something within me. What about you? Do you
agree with Dobell? How do you define “life”?
--------------------------------------------------------------** 4. Closing Remarks **
--------------------------------------------------------------It’s been a remarkable 2 months! Thanks for reading!
