About the Seminar
Ethical dilemmas are inevitable in counselling and counselling supervision. However, the successful management of these dilemmas involves engaging in ethical enquiry rather than finding an instant answer to a problem. This applies to the ethical dilemmas arising from what to take, or not to take, to counselling supervision.
On the one hand, not taking a relevant issue to supervision could result in harm to a client, with the counsellor being held liable for the harm caused. On the other hand, supervisors could be held vicariously liable for the negligent actions of their supervisees and the negative impact on clients, even when the supervisor did not know about the above actions.
It can help here to see counselling supervision and client work as parallel processes. The emotions (shame, embarrassment, fear etc.) that counsellors find difficult to admit to in work with clients are often those that they find difficult to take to supervision. The result is that sometimes the very issues that should be brought to supervision are not .
The seminar will examine: the ethical dilemmas involved in deciding what to bring to counselling supervision how the refusal of counsellors to know and/or to recognise feelings, thoughts etc. affects what they bring to supervision why counsellors take some but not other issues to counselling supervision the risks to clients, counsellors and supervisors from the above the role of counsellors and supervisors in maintaining the ethical aspects of practice a decision making model for working with ethical dilemmas
Robin Shohet will deliver the keynote presentation. Robin has been teaching supervision through the Centre for Supervision and Team
Development for 30 years. He is co-author of Supervision in the Helping
Professions and editor of Passionate Supervision . Robin lives at the
Findhorn Foundation, a spiritual community in the North East of Scotland.
In discussion groups, case studies will be used to explore the above ethical dilemmas.
