North Western Foundation School ELHT Programme Individual Placement Description Placement F2 Dermatology and on call Rota for acute medicine The department The dermatology department comprises 5 consultant dermatologists. Contact dermatitis and patch testing, phototherapy, photodynamic therapy, psoriasis, paediatrics, vulval disease, biological treatments and dermatological surgery are all interests represented in the department. The department serves East Lancashire with a catchment population of 500,000. The department is closely linked with the tertiary centre in Manchester and with other dermatology departments nearby. The type of work to expect and learning opportunities Mainly out patient clinics as we only have access to 4 cold inpatient beds F2 doctors will be in clinics mainly but will be responsible for the day to day care of inpatients. The overall educational objectives for F2 attachment in dermatology are to provide the trainee with the knowledge and experience to: Taking a history and examine a dermatology patient. Identify and synthesise a problem list Prescribe topical and oral medication safely. Keep accurate and relevant medical records. Manage time and clinical priorities effectively. Attend clinical meetings, journal club and MDT meetings Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues. Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care. Act in a professional manner at all times Cope with the ethical and medico legal issues which can occur during the management of patients with dermatological problems. Educate patients effectively using the teaching aids available in the department. Become life-long learners and teachers and maintain a curiosity about dermatology and general medicine. Where the placement is based Clinical Supervisor(s) for placement Main duties of the placement Burnley General Hospital Dermatology Department the Dr Brigid M Daly The F2 doctor will be responsible with other staff for the 4 in patients and the maintenance of their records. They will be responsible to discharge summaries. Clinics are held each day and they will have the opportunity to work with a least 4 of the consultants. They will be expected to attend the specialty clinic in eczema, psoriasis, photodynamic therapy, hyperhidrosis clinic with the use of Botox, minor surgery clinics and the emergency dermatology clinic. If interested they may have their own minor operation clinic.
