The show was ably judged by USEF “r” judge Kathy Kerron from Bend. Forty-four horses and riders participated in fifty-two classes from TrotAPole to 3’3” Jumpers. It was a lovely Rogue Valley Indian Summer weekend, and the ring and courses were beautiful, thanks to jumps and decorations from Martha Brooks and Leslie Zock, and evergreen trees from Grange Co-op. This show is produced entirely by volunteers and is the only fundraiser during the year for SOHJA. Profits from this year’s show go toward 2011 yearend awards and 2012 scholarships. Although volunteers were in short supply, co-managers Melanie Plisskin and Leslie Zock would like to thank the hard working ones who were there to help. The highlight of the show was the SOHJA Medal Finals. Riders who qualified throughout the year were eligible to compete in the finals, which consisted of two rounds over challenging equitation courses. This year’s winner was Blair Wilkinson of Cottage Grove riding Wildtree Farm’s Four Star and coached by Norma Richards. The winner received a very nice pair of equitation boots. Reserve also received equitation boots and third received schooling boots. All riders received an 8x10 photo from JChase Photography, a SOHJA polo shirt and a horse keychain. This year’s final was generously sponsored by My Shadow and Kalli. The rest of the show results appear later in this newsletter. The backing of our many great sponsors and advertisers helped make the show a success. SOHJA truly appreciates their support. If you have any thoughts or suggestions you would like the committee to consider, please contact Martha or Leslie. LeAnn is chair of the nominating committee, which will be seeking people interested in serving on the SOHJA board of directors. Members are nominated and then voted on by the general membership. Three board members’ terms expire this year so the membership will be voting for three “new” board members. Each board member serves a two year term. Both current junior members will be unable to serve out their terms as they are going away to college, so two new board members will be voted on by the junior membership. If you are interested in serving on the board, please contact LeAnn. LeAnn is also seeking nominations for the Gastaldi Award. The Gastaldi Award is presented every year, in memory of Kathi Gastaldi, to a SOHJA member who best represents our sport through horsemanship, sportsmanship and contribution to the sport. If you have someone you would like to nominate for this year’s award, please contact LeAnn. Plans are underway for this year’s Awards Banquet and a committee is being formed to deal with all of the many details of the banquet. Please contact Hillary with your offer to help with the banquet. These things don’t get put on by themselves. YEAR-END AWARDS BANQUET The SOHJA 2011 Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday evening, January 21, 2012 at the Rogue Regency Inn in Medford. Watch your mailboxes for your 2 banquet invitation with all the details. Mark your calendar and plan to join all your friends for a fun and entertaining evening of awards and … Your banquet envelope will also include a 2012 membership renewal form and your ballot to vote for the Gastaldi Award, board members and some rule change proposals. he would always be the favorite of whoever rode him. In his show outing in August, he won the TrotAPole Pleasure class for his novice rider. He also showed at the Yearend show in October. Early in November, he developed severe neurological problems and was humanely put down. He was 26. Any one who had the pleasure of being around this giant will never forget his incredibly gentle nature. MEMBERSHIP REMINDER BARN NEWS Membership renewals for 2012 are being accepted now. Membership dues for 2012 will be going up, but a discount is available for memberships paid for at or before the January awards banquet. So plan to renew at or before the banquet for your discount. Remember, no year-end points can be accrued until current membership dues are paid. MT. BAILEY 1985-2011 In 1993, amateur rider Kim Olson purchased the big grey Draft/Thoroughbred gelding, Bailey, from Debbie Brown (Low) in Bend. She trained with Leslie Zock at Heather Hill and rode Bailey (Partly Cloudy) very successfully in the Adult Amateur division at the local shows for several years. In 1998, Kim gave up her jumping career and tried a little Dressage before retiring Bailey at home. After watching him stand idly in the field for several years, she decided he would be happier and healthier at work, and loaned him to Heather Hill for their school horse program. He thrived as a lesson horse, teaching beginning and intermediate children and adults to ride. When Heather Hill closed, he followed Barbara Messinger to Cygnet Farm to continue as a lesson horse. As his size and age began to catch up with him, his duties in the school became less demanding, but his kind nature insured Cygnet Farm: It’s been a busy summer for Cygnet Farm riders. A number of our riders went to the Pax Diem show in September and did well, and enjoyed the nice show that Martha always puts on. Many thanks to Martha for the effort it takes to do this. Liz Denny and Lolly McLellan attended the Kathy Kusner clinic and enjoyed training under this reknowned horsewoman. The SOHJA Benefit show rounded out the year of local showing for our riders, and there was a big Cygnet turn-out, including seven school horses, all of which did well. Our thanks for all of the work that went into creating this event, which was much enjoyed by our riders. Alexia Hulen has a new horse in the barn, Michaelangelo, a large chestnut appendix Quarterhorse gelding purchased from Joan Claypool. Alex Jasperson has purchased Legat, a warmblood gelding, from Joyce Moreno, and Alain Herriott now owns Tashi, the beautiful grey Trakehner mare formerly owned by Noa and Marya Hecht. Liz Denny took four horses to the Rancho Murietta Halloween Show near Sacramento. She rode MMC Electrifying to two double clear rounds in the 4’ Jumpers, and finished just out of the money with 4 faults in the Mini-Prix. Lolly McLellan rode Elven Gold to two firsts and the Championship in the Low Pony Jumpers and got good ribbons in the Low Jumpers. Lolly showed Happy Thoughts to ribbons in the Childrens’ Pony 3 Hunters as well. Isabella Sendar did well in the Equitation division on My Shadow, winning the Flat Eq and getting 3rd in the Onondarka Medal. Pax Diem Equestrian Center: Kendra Pinnell sadly sent Sparkles back to Cygnet, as she has outgrown her. We are looking for a lease horse for her to move up to. Must be kind and able to jump 2’6”. Other bells and whistles would be nice of course. Brooke McLeod traveled to the Let’s Show Halloween Show at Rancho Murietta. She rode with Vicki Zacharias and had a blast. The extensive Halloween decorations took Harley’s mind off his business at first, but he settled down to win good ribbons in the Meter 1.10 (3’7”) and a jumper medal. Zeus, Martha’s little white dog, was Reserve Champion in the dog costume class. The highlight of the show was the horse costume class with many great costumes. Vicki shared top honors in the trainer division with her Gumby & Pokey costume. Brooke is looking forward to the Jeff Cook clinic in early November. Thank you to SOHJA for the scholarship to help with expenses. Brooke will be in the advanced group, jumping 4’. She hopes to move up to the Meter 1.15-1.2 next year. We got the rest of the Pax Diem stalls matted and stall cleaning just got a lot easier! The next project is a warm viewing room. Silver Spring Farm: Silver Spring Farm has had an exciting few months. We completed our new outdoor arena with German Geo-Textile Footing. We are excited about the development of a Grand Prix jumping field, and the new parking/stabling area will accommodate future events. We are excited to expand our training program to include Garrett Warner. Working extensively for the great hunter rider John French in California, top Grand Prix Jumping rider Aaron Vale in Florida, and Gilbert Bockmann in Germany, Garrett’s unique background influences his fresh approach to training horses and riders in the hunter, jumper and equitation rings. He joins trainers Derek Latty, Megan Haldane and Lara Schleining at Silver Spring. The Kathy Kusner clinic was very well attended. Silver Spring Farm was grateful for the outpouring of support from both the participants and the sponsors. It was wonderful to have Liz Denny, Kevin Freeman and Akiko Hamada in attendance. We would like to extend a special thanks to Giddeup Botique, Paradise Lodge, Town & Country Chevrolet, Adroit Construction, Mix Sweet Shop, Talent Café and Crater Animal Clinic for their generosity. Wildtree Farm: Unseasonable downpours, logging, and the summer of injured horsesnothing stops Wildtree Farm from marching on and having a great time doing so. The Wildtree schooling series got off to a slow start this year and was edited down to four shows. The July and August shows went smoothly with good weather and turn-out. In September, for something a little different, we put on an old-fashioned hunt show, with natural obstacles in and out of the ring. The course was beautiful and the crowd enthusiastic, but the weather failed us. Horses and riders who stuck it out through torrential rain showed their good temperaments and aptitudes for dealing with the unpredictable. We just wrapped up our show series with our Halloween show at Avalon in Cottage Grove. Avry Hansen of Roseburg won the Wildtree Farm Minimedal for the second year in a row, and as always, the costumes were inventive and entertaining. Keeping with the theme of the summer, the two Wildtree camps also came with their share of obstacles. More rain for the July camp and injured horses for August. One day of the camp turned into a series of lectures by Dr. Wes Violet, as he treated 4 four lame horses. Campers showed their generous spirits the rest of the weekend, by sharing horses so everyone got to ride. Some of us were able to make it to southern Oregon for a couple of shows and a clinic. We always enjoy visiting our horse friends to the south and appreciate how welcome they make us feel. Blair Wilkinson had a great time competing in and winning the SOHJA Medal Finals, riding Four Star owned by Norma. The courses were beautifully designed by Leslie Zock and we really enjoyed riding them. Thanks to SOHJA and Royal Crest Ranch for a very beautiful and fun show. We are looking forward to a winter of fine tuning, a few local schooling shows, and hopefully a clinic or two to prepare us for next show season. We are keeping our fingers crossed for fewer hurdles.
