This unit standard cannot be assessed against in a simulated environment. For
assessment, candidates must demonstrate competence in the workplace through
paid or unpaid employment, or in placements in a service provider workplace
negotiated by an education provider.

Competence must be demonstrated through the preparation of a minimum of one risk
management plan. This risk management plan must be based on an actual example
from within a health organisation, which includes providers of aged care, health, and
disability services. A minimum of one context for risk assessment is required, which
may include but is not limited to any of the following – consumer or staff health
issues, health and safety considerations, recreational services, research, residential
services, service delivery to an individual consumer, service delivery in general, staff
employment, staff training.

For assessment, candidates’ practice must reflect appropriate values, processes,
and protocols in relation to working with Māori and Pacific peoples and/or people
from other cultures.

Definitions
Organisation's policies and procedures are the policies and procedures of the
employing organisation of the candidate and include ethical codes, standards, and
other organisational requirements.
Risk is the chance of injury, damage, loss, or hazard to a person or organisation.
Risk can be to an individual’s identity or physical, emotional, or cultural well-being, or
to an organisation’s reputation, viability, or resource base.
Risk management is the process of identifying, assessing, and controlling, mitigating,
or transferring risks arising from organisational, social, and environmental factors. It
includes making decisions that balance potential risks with the potential benefits that
could arise from accepting a risk.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Carry out a risk assessment within a health organisation.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Risks identified are relevant and sensitive to the information supplied on the
context for the risk assessment.
1.2
An evaluation of the probability and potential impact of the risks is provided,
which is both relevant and sensitive to the information supplied on the context
for the risk assessment.
1.3
An evaluation of any potential benefit(s) that could be gained from accepting the
risk(s) is provided, balanced against the potential harm arising from the risk(s)
to people or the organisation.

Outcome 2
Develop risk management strategies within a health organisation.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Strategies are relevant and sensitive to the identified risks, the risk assessment,
and stakeholder input.
Range
2.2
stakeholders may include but are not limited to – management,
staff, consumer(s).
Strategies are based on a recognised model and/or philosophy for the type of
risk being managed.
Range
examples may include but are not limited to – Plan Do Check Act
(PDCA), accreditation, ISO certification.
2.3
Strategies identify how the risk(s) will be controlled, mitigated, or transferred.
2.4
Strategies include a monitoring system that specifies the frequency of auditing
and who is/are responsible for monitoring.
Outcome 3
Prepare a risk management plan within a health organisation.
Evidence requirements
3.1
The plan covers all relevant factors in risk management.
Range
3.2
relevant factors may include but are not limited to – context, risks
identified, assessment, strategies, communication and
consultation process, monitoring and evaluation systems;
evidence is required of a minimum of four relevant factors.
The plan is prepared in accordance with the requirements of the organisation's
policies and procedures.
Range
requirements may include but are not limited to – agreed
timeframes, format and method of presentation for a risk
management plan, lines of communication and authority for
presentation of a risk management plan;
evidence is required of a minimum of three requirements.

before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses

NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
