Volunteer Job Descriptions Student Recruiter As alumni, you are in an excellent position to help applicants develop an understanding of what makes Kent State University unique and wonderful place to attend college. The more informed our applicants are the more likely they are to choose Kent State University and who better to inform them but our amazing alumni. You can help by volunteering to attend our Admissions Receptions in key cities and speaking with students and their families about what Kent State means to you and your experience here. Additionally you can serve as valuable resource promoting Kent State University in your community and by referring prospective students. The best source for finding out about outstanding prospective students is from you...our alumni, friends, faculty & staff! Identifying students whom you feel embody the characteristics we seek is a great way to support your institution. Recent Graduate Advisory Council Member The Recent Graduate Advisory Council was created to maintain a strong connection with Kent State University young alumni and better serve their needs. The council is comprised of alumni who graduated in the last five years. Alumni volunteers provide feedback on marketing, fundraising and program development to the Division of Institutional Advancement to help further the mission of Kent State University. Volunteers are responsible for attending quarterly meetings at the Williamson Alumni Center (conference calling is an option), responding to monthly e-communication and represent the needs and interests of Kent State young alumni. Scholarship Review Committee- Each March, over 100 students apply for scholarships that are administered by the Kent State University Alumni Association. 19 scholarships are awarded annually to future KSU alumni. Volunteers are needed to review the applications and help determine our annual scholarship winners. This is a great way to give back to our students and support the importance of philanthropy of providing scholarships to deserving KSU students. Presidential Inauguration Representative An inauguration is not just the formal installation ceremony to celebrate a new university president, but is comprised of a series of events organized around the ceremony. These events provide opportunities for the members of the university family to celebrate all elements of the university, unite those with a stake in the future of the university, and move forward together with a common understanding and vision for the future. In cases where our President is unable to attend a Presidential Inauguration we will look for an alumni delegate, often times who works on the campus hosting the inauguration, to represent Kent State University at the events surrounding the inauguration and such an important ceremony. Homecoming Committee There were many ways to get involved in Homecoming as a Kent State alumni, student, faculty or staff member - from interviewing students for Court, judging the parade to cheering on the Golden Flashes! Homecoming serves as an opportunity to celebrate Kent State's finest traditions with alumni, students, and the community! The committee will coordinate all aspects of Homecoming. Kent Student Ambassador Selection Committee The Kent State Student Ambassadors, established in 1983 as a branch of the Kent State Alumni Association, is a service organization comprised of Kent State's finest students. Members actively participate in the community and on campus, inspiring pride in Kent State University, upholding the university's reputation, and serving as liaisons between students and administration, campus and community. We need Alumni to help us select the best of the best! Distinguished Teaching Award Selection Committee Since 1967, more than 100 of Kent State’s best teachers have been honored with this prestigious award. The faculty members who have been recognized come from different colleges and schools, have diverse backgrounds and teaching styles – but what they share is a love of learning and the ability to share this with their students. Each year more than 300 faculty members are nominated for this award. Alumni and student volunteers are needed to review the nominations and help determine the finalists and three recipients. This is a tangible way for Kent State alumni students to show their appreciation for the hard work and dedication faculty members show their students. Careers over Coffee Panelist The Careers over Coffees program is designed to provide students with an informal setting to meet with alumni career assistance volunteers and learn from their professional insight. Panels of alumni from specific fields are assembled speak to student interested in that career field. Each panelist will be asked to prepare marks covering topics ranging from how to make your application, to skill-sets potential employers are searching for in today’s job market. Student will have the opportunity to ask follow up questions over coffee. Career Mentors Alumni volunteers serve as a career networking partners or mentors for students and graduates to call, email or write with career information. Other Flashes love hearing the success stories of Kent State alumni, appreciate receiving career advice and enjoy learning about opportunities within their career paths. Both Student Alumni and Alumni Association members are eligible to request a mentor. Career mentors will be provided with resources for mentoring when they volunteer. National Alumni Board Member Relocation Assistant When you become a member of the Alumni Association, you can make yourself available for other Golden Flashes to contact you if they are new to your area. This is a great way to make fellow Alumni feel welcome and to meet new people! Area Representative – This is a great way for alumni to get connected and stay with other KSU grads in areas across the country without a being an official chapter. Our area representatives bring together alumni in different parts of the country for socializing, networking and cheering on KSU in various athletic events. Chapter Volunteer/Leader No other volunteer opportunity has the ability to reach more alumni than our Chapter volunteers! Alumni volunteers have organized alumni chapters that support common interests and experiences and/or that connect large populations of alumni in key cities…. keeping Flashes connected to one another and the Kent State University. Chapters count on the involvement and initiative of their volunteers to define the level of their programming. More information on alumni chapters is available by selecting the Chapters and Groups Other ways to get connected & support KSU Reunion Committee – Reunions are always a great way to connect with old friends and even meet some new ones! Each year, many different groups, classes and organizations hold reunions on campus. Joining a committee and helping to plan a reunion is a great way to give back not only to the University, but also to something that had an impact on your time spent at Kent. Join committees such as college reunions, the 50th class reunion, and social Greek reunions. It’s a fun and rewarding way to get involved and see just how far Kent has come since you’ve been back! Professional Networking Events Throughout the year, the Alumni Association will host networking events geared towards alumni and graduating seniors. Career fields are chosen for many of the networking events but one general networking event occurs in the spring. Volunteers with substantial experience in the career field are needed to provide those new to the field or those trying to broaden their professional network personal interaction. Kent State Alumni Association members enjoy benefits and services such as discounts at local merchants and auto insurance, career assistance programs – all while enjoying invaluable connections with one another. Athletics - Purchase season tickets and show your Kent State Pride by attending sporting events to cheer for your favorite sport. Class Notes - Have you recently gotten married or started a new career? Let us know of any changes in your life that you would like to share with fellow alums by submitting or updating a class note.
