As students living in the United States, Globalization has impacted us in many ways. We drink Coke, eat Tex-Mex food, play Nintendo’s Wii and use Nokia cell phones. American troops are engaged in two wars in Asia and our country is dependent on foreign oil and products made in Chinese factories. With all of this in mind it is time to ask ourselves the question: 'What does Globalization have to do with me?' A. Let us begin by looking at what the world would look like if it were a village made up of 100 people. This provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the world we live in. Before you watch the video, Miniature Earth, take time to consider the following: The world around us often sends a wake up call. Sometimes this is in the form of a new idea or powerful emotion. Use the Web video, “Miniature Earth”, to explore the topic of globalization, looking for something that calls to you personally. When you find it, think about the scene, example, information, image, or whatever related to the topic that was most powerful to you. Examine more deeply the thoughts that you had, find the abstract idea that is at the heart of your reflection. In other words, what Big Idea, Truth of Emotion resonates with you most as you watch this video. Examples include concepts like 'happiness,' 'honesty,' 'equality,' 'love,' and 'friendship.' Write a short paragraph that explains and highlights an abstraction you identified in this video. Post your paragraph to your class’s Wiki page. B. One of the components of globalization is the interconnectedness of the world through technology. Innovations are created or modified at a rapid rate and thus the world is changing as a result. In fact, the video that you will watch is about a year old, but some of the information is already out-of-date due to rapidly changing technology and its quick diffusion around the world. Watch the video, Did You Know, and contemplate the impact technology has and will have on you and the world.
