We see images of mouths talking, hand gestures, sign language, mannerisms and body movements from people from around the world. These images establish and summarise the action of communicating in multiple languages and set the scene for the program to follow. Breaking in and out of this montage is a presenter, Kathy Bowlen*, presenting to camera; KATHY BOWLEN: Victoria’s population is renowned and remarkable in its ethnic diversity – our community has a rich variety of languages, customs and cultures. Victorians speak over 180 languages and dialects from familiar languages such as Greek, Arabic and Italian, to languages from newer communities from Africa, such as Dinka and Oromo. One in five people speak a language other than English at home so access to language services – interpreting and translating – is a huge challenge. This educational resource has been developed to look at these challenges and help make your work with Interpreters easier and more enjoyable. Let’s look at seven scenes, seven situations that you may be familiar with when working with interpreters.
