CONTEST AGREEMENT The UTSA Alumni Association and Student Alumni Association sponsor the annual Mr. & Ms. UTSA Contest each spring during Homecoming to recognize students who embody the spirit of UTSA and to acknowledge students’ academic achievements, campus involvement, and community service. ELIGIBILITY Candidates must be full-time UTSA students1 (currently enrolled a minimum of 12 semester hours for undergraduates or 9 semester hours for graduate students) at the application deadline and during the voting period. 1 Exemption: if you are graduating, you must turn in a signed affidavit from your academic advisor stating you have fulfilled all the requirements to graduate and enroll in a UTSA graduate school program. Candidates must have completed at least 24 semester hours for an undergraduate degree and 7 hours for a graduate degree at UTSA, have a minimum UTSA GPA of 2.75, be in good disciplinary standing, and cannot be on academic or disciplinary probation with the University at the time of application and during the voting period. Candidates must submit a completed application to the Alumni Programs Office, UC. 2.00.10 no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, February 1, 2008. Candidates must secure either one (1) UTSA registered student organization, OR two (2) UTSA faculty or professional staff members for endorsement. A UTSA organization, faculty, or professional staff member may sponsor only one male candidate and one female candidate. Only members of the female sex will be considered for the Ms. UTSA position. Only members of the male sex will be considered for the Mr. UTSA position. Students who have previously been awarded the title of Mr. /Ms. UTSA are not eligible for the contest. CONTEST PARTICIPATION Candidates are expected to participate in all Homecoming events as outlined on the schedule enclosed. Candidates are to display the highest degree of sportsmanship during the contest and following the awarding of the title. SELECTION OF TOP FINALISTS A selection committee comprised of UTSA alumni, faculty and staff to determine the top finalists (three men and three women) will interview all candidates who submit completed applications by the deadline, and meet the criteria above. Interviews with the Selection Committee will take place Thursday and Friday, February 7 and 8. Candidates must sign up for your interview when applications are submitted. The following criteria will be considered by the Selection Committee: Academic achievement and honors Involvement in UTSA campus activities and organizations Involvement in community service Attitude toward UTSA Potential ability to represent the University The finalists will be determined based on 30% application and 70% interview. Student online voting through ASAP determines Mr. & Ms. UTSA winners. Voting will take place: Tuesday, February 26 and Wednesday, February 27. The candidates with the largest number of votes in each category will win. CONTEST CAMPAIGNING Candidates and candidates’ affiliates, agents or workers who choose to campaign must follow these overall guidelines: Abide by the Student Code of Conduct as found at: http://www.utsa.edu/infoguide/A.pdf Follow publicity and solicitation guidelines in the Student Organization Handbook http://www.utsa.edu/sa/SO/index.htm All promotional materials must list the contest as sponsored by the UTSA Alumni Association and Student Alumni Association. Complaints regarding campaigning should be directed to the administrator who handles the Mr. & Ms. UTSA contest in Alumni Programs. General Campaigning Candidates may generally inform the UTSA community to vote during the Mr. & Ms. UTSA contest two weeks prior to elections. Dates for 2008 are midnight Sunday, February 10 – midnight Sunday, February 17. Candidate Campaigning Candidates may begin campaigning for specific candidates beginning Monday, February 18 through announcing of winners on Saturday, March 1. Candidate Pairings Candidates are paired alphabetically by last name. This pairing is for presentation purposes only, however, candidates may campaign with assigned partner. Candidates who choose to campaign as a pair bears all responsibilities of each other and if either candidate in the pair is in violation of any campaigning policies, both candidates will be disciplined which may include disqualification from the contest. Voters do not have to vote for pairs of candidates. Ultimately, each candidate is running for him/herself. It is the candidates’ responsibility to educate the voters on voting procedures, dates and times. COMMITMENT OF SERVICE Winners of the Mr. & Ms. UTSA contest will reign from Homecoming halftime show 2008 until Homecoming halftime show 2009 or until a successor is selected should the need arise. Mr. & Ms. UTSA represents UTSA at various Homecoming functions and events throughout the year. UTSA departments, offices or entities may request an appearance or volunteer activity by Mr. or Ms. UTSA. All appearance requests are submitted to Alumni Programs for approval.
