INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS
1.
Purpose of the post of Research Fellow
The post of Research Fellow at the University of Zululand has been introduced for the following reasons:
•
•
To enable ex-employees of the University to continue with their research work to the benefit of the
University and themselves;
To allow other productive researchers not presently affiliated to SAPSE fund generating institutions to
align themselves with the University for mutual benefits;
To enhance the research capacity and esteem of the University;
To earn research funds for the University of Zululand.
2.

•
•

posts.
The Research Committee of Senate can confer the title of "Distinguished Research Fellow" on deserving
candidates. Applications cannot be made for this title. Nominations should be made by the Department to
which the Research Fellow is attached and such nominations will be considered by the Research
Committee of Senate.
3.
Application procedure
Appointments shall be made for a period of three years, renewable but subject to annual review. The
following appointment procedures shall apply.

The prospective Research Fellow must complete an approved form, and supply a full
curriculum vita, with two letters of motivation for appointment to the position
3.2

recommendation;

submitted to the Research Committee for consideration and recommendation;


4.
Remuneration
Research Fellows shall receive a nominal salary of R1.00 (One Rand) per annum in order that they qualify as
employees of the University for SAPSE funding purposes.
Research Fellows shall receive the amount of 80% of the SAPSE funds generated by accredited publications
which:
a).
indicate that the researcher is affiliated to the University of Zululand
b).
have been duly registered at the Research Office.
The remaining 20% shall be made available to the host department by the Research Committee. Funds will
only be available once the SAPSE generated funds have been made over to the University of Zululand,
which currently occurs in March each year. Funding is thus available between 12 and 24 months after
submission of the publication to the Research Office.
Upon any change in the SAPSE funding system for accredited publications, the remuneration for Research
Fellows shall immediately come under review.
In cases where people become Research Fellows directly after termination of another contract with the
University of Zululand, any individually generated research funds already allocated to them (accrued at the
rates applicable to permanent staff members) shall remain at their disposal.
Research Fellows who supervise Masters and Doctorate students to completion shall be eligible to receive
the same subsidies as full time staff who supervise students.
5. Access to Funds
Funds allocated to the Research Fellow from SAPSE publications or the supervision of students can be
accessed in two ways:
(a)
through non-taxable claims for direct expenses on bona fide research work, equipment, research
materials, attendance of conferences, research exchanges etc., based on University rates applicable
at the time.
OR
(b)
as a taxable payment, processed through the normal channels.
The balance of individually generated funds are payable (after taxation if necessary) to the Research Fellow
on termination of contract with the University, or in case of death, to his or her nominee.
Research Fellows shall also be eligible to claim page fees due for publications they produce up to the
current limit approved by the Research Committee for full time staff members.
6.
Duties and Responsibilities of Research Fellows
Research Fellows undertake to conduct their research under the auspices of the specific Department to
which they have been allocated, and to publish their research findings with due and proper recognition to
the University.
To receive a portion of the generated funds, Research Fellows have to register projects through their
Department and Faculty with the Research Administration on the prescribed form (RC1).
Applications for individually generated funds have to be submitted via the Department to the Research
Administration on the prescribed forms (RC5a/b/c)
4
Research Fellows shall also exhibit a willingness to cooperate with lecturers and students at their
Departments and to assist with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes if possible.
Research Fellows shall have access to books at the University Library, though all other services would be at
their own expense in negotiation with their Department.
Research Fellows, as employees of the University, are not allowed to be employees of other SAPSEgenerating bodies, and undertake not to publish in accredited journals under any other such body.
Research Fellows are not eligible to be members of Faculty Boards, Senate or any other decision making
body of the University.
The names of the Research Fellows shall appear in the Calendar of the University under the Faculty and
Departmental lists. In return the Research Fellow is expected to identify him or herself officially as an
employee of the University. This applies to publications, listings in conference procedures and business cards.
7.
Termination of service
Should a Research Fellow accept a permanent appointment at another SAPSE-generating body, he or she
has to resign as a Research Fellow at this institution.
Termination of service is by mutual consent, or when a Research Fellow has not generated any research
work for a period of three years. In all other cases the rules and requirements for conduct of University
employees apply.
8.
Disclaimer
The Research Fellow renounces any claims on financial or other privileges at the University of Zululand other
than those explicitly stated in this document, including contributions toward medical funds, pension
schemes, group assurance policies, study privileges, offices, office equipment, access to funds of the
Research Committee or Departmental generated funds, or funds at the disposal of any other University
body. It is in the discretion of the Vice Rector (Academic Affairs and Research) to extend the list of above
items.
The Research Fellow understands that the use of any physical facilities at the University and Department rests
with the Specific Department and Faculty and needs to be negotiated on an ad hoc basis. Payment for
expenses might be required.
The acceptance of the post shall not impinge on any previous or other retrenchment arrangements
between the University and the Research Fellow.
