How to have my pet ready for an ultrasound study

Getting your Pet Ready
for an Ultrasound
In most cases, unless otherwise indicated by your veterinarian, your pet needs to be fasted
of food for at least 12 hours prior to the procedure. Diabetic pets should not be fasted.
Also, all pets should not be allowed to void urine at least three to four hours prior to the
ultrasound study. This is especially important when the urinary system (urinary bladder
and kidneys) is the specific organ of suspected disease.
We encourage your veterinary hospital to shave your pet prior to the study, if possible.
However, if not, your pet will be shaved at the time of the ultrasound study.
The ultrasound study can be performed as a drop-off (the preferred method) or if you are
waiting while the study is performed. Unfortunately, you will not be allowed in the
procedure room when the study is performed.
You should be aware that no special procedure or sedative will be performed or utilized
without your consent
You should confirm that you have all your pet’s the information, including radiographs
performed prior to the study, to be available for the radiologist when you are arriving at
our imaging center. Your veterinarian should provided these documents to you or send
them in advance to us.
If you have any questions, you should first ask your veterinarian. If the question remains
unanswered or needs to be clarified, you can have your veterinarian reach Dr Giroux.
