Holy Family Parish March 2015 Knights of Columbus News General Council Meeting Wednesday, March 11, 7:15 PM St. Mary’s Room Officers Meeting: Tuesday March 3, 7:00 PM St. Mary’s Room All Worthy Brother Knights are welcome * * * KNIGHTS MASS – March 1, 9:30 AM A section is reserved for ALL Brother Knights and their families to worship and celebrate the Eucharist together as an integral part of the Holy Family faith community. All are encouraged to gather at 9:25 AM near the Hospitality Room to process into church behind our banner. Proudly display your lapel pins, shirts and other identifying items. Sir Knights are encouraged to attend in tuxedos, social baldric and gloves. Please join us even you can't attend meetings or otherwise participate in Council activities. As part of our Knights Mass shared worship, we sponsor and host donuts and coffee for all parishioners immediately following Mass. This is an opportunity for Catholic fellowship, conversation, and socializing. GRAND KNIGHT NOTES February, while a short month, has been a very busy month for Council 13123. Aside from our usual coffee/donuts the first Sunday of the month, regular membership meeting and pancake breakfast, we began in earnest to plan for our Fraternal Benefits Night and Major Degree scheduled for March. These events celebrate Founder’s Day and you are encouraged to attend both happenings. Please see elsewhere in this newsletter for the specifics related to each of these upcoming events. Also, it was my great pleasure as Grand Knight to award on your behalf $1,000 each to four (4) local agencies dealing with clients experiencing intellectual disabilities. The details of this presentation are provided further on in this newsletter but I would point out that this would not have been possible without your participation in our “Tootsie Roll Drive” late last year. The sincere appreciation on the faces of the recipients was very evident. We also gave a case of Tootsie Rolls to each agency, which they also loved. Council 13123 We are now in the midst of Lent and I would offer for your consideration many of Holy Family’s opportunities to make this a meaning time. In particular, Symbolon is an excellent program on the fundamentals of our Catholic faith. I am participating in the Saturday morning sessions but there are other times you can join in a group or just visit the website for personal study. Give it a try. Also, the Knights “Building the Domestic Church” Program is another way for families to build up their faith. See elsewhere in this newsletter for more information pertaining to these items. Thanks for all you do with the Knights. I look forward to seeing you at one or more of the above upcoming events. Yours fraternally, Bob Tetzloff, Grand Knight HONORS January Knight of the Month As a relatively new Knight, Nicholas “Nick” Sentovich impresses everyone he meets from the start. Nick joined the Knights of Columbus Council 13123 on July 22, 2012, attaining the First, Second and Third degrees and recently became a Fourth Degree Knight. Nick is currently a fourth year college student at St. John Vianney College, located in St. Paul, Minnesota. During his last semester, Nick was privileged to be selected to continue his seminarian studies in Rome. Prior to college, Nick attended Holy Family Grade School and Boylan High School, volunteering as an altar server, being involved in the Holy Family Youth Group and working on various projects for the parish. Having been exposed to good parish priests and being led by the Holy Spirit, Nick began his serious discernment during his senior year in high school and first year of college, leading to his decision to study for the priesthood. Nick continues to help at the parish during his “off time”, evident from his assisting the parish priests during Mass. Council 13123 is honored in naming Nicholas Sentovich as Knight of the Month for January, 2015 and offering his example to all young men discerning their call to the priesthood. January Family of the Month It is with great pleasure that Council 13123 honors Gary and Barbara “Barb” Knoll as Knight Family of the Month for January 2015. Gary and Barb have contributed much to the Knights of Columbus, the church and community for over forty-six (46) years. Gary has Holy Family Parish March 2015 Knights of Columbus News served the councils he has belonged to over the years in various officer positions, as well as serving as a Guard, Trustee and Chancellor for Council 13123. Gary supports his church by being a lector and usher. He is also an active member of the pro-Life Committee at church and very instrumental in supporting the successful efforts in closing down the Rockford abortion clinic. Barb has served the parish as a Eucharistic minister and sacristan, as well as being an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary and Woman’s Guild. She was until last year also the Wedding Coordinator for the parish. Both Gary and Barb have contributed many volunteer hours in support of these functions and are very worthy of this honor. BUILDING THE DOMESTIC CHURCH/SYMBOLON Supreme has developed a program for strengthening families and building up our faith. Each month Knights are provided a plan of family events suggested for that month. Check out March’s recommended activities at kofc.org/familyfullyalive today and enjoy. Also, Holy Family Parish is now in the midst of a new initiative entitled “Symbolon”. This program is intended to help parishioners grow in their faith by becoming more informed about the Catholic faith and its teachings. All Knights and families are encouraged to participate in this program, which extends into June. Details on the various session times may be found in the parish bulletin. Plan now to join the sessions. You can review prior sessions by going on-line to the Symbolon site. MEDITATION Prayer needs to become a regular habit in the daily life of each family. Prayer is thanksgiving, praise of God, asking His forgiveness, supplication and invocation. In all these forms the prayer of family has much to say to God. St. John Paul II, Letter to families KNIGHTS IN ACTION THANK YOU! INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES DRIVE During a recess of the General Council Meeting on February 11th, Grand Knight Bob Tetzloff presented checks for $1000.00 to each of the representatives from the four local charities we support through the annual Intellectual Disability Drive, better known as the Tootsie Roll Drive. The checks were presented on Council 13123 behalf of our Council and all the Knights who donated their time, treasure and talents to make this critical assistance possible. CHARITY – OUR FIRST PRINCIPLE One never knows what an e-mail can accomplish. Brother John Fayhee advised several of us last Friday of a serious situation concerning some nuns on the west side of Chicago. The Sisters of Fraternite Notre Dame serve the most destitute of Chicago from their church and have two (2) boilers that supply their heat. Both failed within the last week and you can imagine the dire situation they are facing. In fact, the holy water froze in the font, as you will see if you open this link: http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/28159479/coldweather-knocks-out-heat-for-west-side-nuns Brother Clark Farrell also forwarded the message to me and I originally thought this would be better handled from the Chicago Area Knights councils. However, the thought came to me on Saturday, February 21st, that many State officers were going to be at the Fourth Degree exemplification in Lisle that day. So, I sent a message on Council 13123's behalf to Skip Kinyon, State Deputy, requesting State’s consideration in this matter. I cannot tell if my message was the only one or whether there were many others received along the same lines from other councils. Nevertheless, the State officers acted quickly and decisively by voting that day to send $5,000 to the good sisters. I am ever so grateful that we belong to such a caring and giving organization. I am sure more still needs to be done to get the heating systems replaced but the Knights of Columbus has stepped up in a big way. If any would like to contribute to this cause as part of your Lenten almsgiving, donations can be sent to the following address: Sisters of Fraternite Notre Dame 502 N. Central Avenue Chicago, IL 60644 May God bless the Knights of Columbus and all of us!!! PANCAKE BREAKFAST Pancake Breakfast: Thanks to all of the Knights and Ladies Auxiliary who worked to make the February 15th Pancake Breakfast a success.
