BCCC Library CITING SOURCES FROM THE PUBLICATION MANUAL OF THE AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION (APA) STYLE (6th Edition) The REFERENCES page is alphabetized according to the author’s last name. Each reference usually has the following: author, year of publication, title of book or article (Capitalize only the first word of the title, subtitle, or proper nouns 1), and publication data. If the work has a digital object identifier (doi)2, use it. You must have a reference for every source used in your paper. In the examples below, the references are single spaced. For your references, be sure they are double spaced and if the citation is more than one line indent the remaining lines by ½ an inch. If a periodical does not use volume numbers, include p. or pp. before the page numbers. This is so the reader will understand that the numbers refer to pages 3. Also, don’t use a period at the end of a web address.4 SOURCES BOOKS One author Two to seven authors Eight or more authors5 Editor No Author E-BOOK ESSAY OR CHAPTER IN AN EDITED BOOK PRINT BROCHURE ONLINE BROCHURE REFERENCE Author’s Last Name, First Name initial. A doi (Digital Object Identifier) is a number that provides a persistent link to online content. Don’t include a period at the end of the doi as it may be interpreted as part of the doi. A doi can be looked up at http://www.crossref.org. 3 If the reference includes the volume number, do not use p. or pp. when listing the pages. 4 Do not include a period at the end of the citation as it may be interpreted as part of the Web address. 5 Type in first 6 authors, an ellipse, and then the last author. 6 Although not required by the APA, the BCCC Library recommends including the statement Retrieved from and the name of the database used in you citation even if you have the doi number. 2 ggp – 10/16/2014 APA
