GENERAL INFORMATION

roll, 294 in the 6th form. It serves the northern side of Chester and the outlying villages.
There are 10 forms of entry and the school is oversubscribed. Upton is a specialist
Humanities College. A feature of the vision is the expansion of international work and the
school holds the full British Council International Award. There are currently links with India,
Russia, Gambia, Turkey as well as many European countries.
OUR MISSION
Learning to shape the future
As Upton students, we will;
Act in ways that are environmentally, economically and morally responsible
Develop skills that are entrepreneurial, technological and transferable
Adopt values that are ethical, inclusive and global
Believe in our Power to make a difference
Think creatively, critically and with vision
We will ADAPT to the demands of a rapidly changing world
Our curriculum is designed to provide a broad and balanced programme of learning which is
matched to the ability, aptitude and aspirations of each individual student and which meets
with National Curriculum requirements. It is reviewed annually.
In addition to the formal curriculum we offer a broad range of additional opportunities and
educational visits and have thriving links with industry and community partners. Music,
Drama and Dance are great strengths in the school and students enjoy many extra-curricular
performance opportunities. Sporting achievements are outstanding. The school has
launched a student-led newspaper of a professional standard.
Since September 2011 we have implemented a Hall system of pastoral care. The school is
split into five groups with two forms from each year group. Care for the students within their
hall is provided by the Head of Hall, Assistant Head of Hall, 10 tutors and a number of hall
mentors who provide one-to-one support sessions for students who need extra guidance. In
addition there is a culture of older students looking after the younger ones within their hall
and there are activities and competitions so that everyone can get involved.
Upton-by-Chester High School operates the Cheshire West and Chester Council “No
Smoking” Policy.
