POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION: FISHERY TECHNICIAN I DEPARTMENT: Biology Department GRADE: REPORTS TO: Fisheries Biologist STATUS: Non-Exempt TERM: Temporary Part Time 28 hours a week beginning in July 8th and ending November 6; may be extended depending on availability of funding DOE POSITION SUMMARY: The Fishery Technician I employee will assist the Bay Mills Biological Services Program Fishery Department during routine Great Lakes fish stock assessment and commercial harvest monitoring projects. This position will require the employee to perform tasks associated with deploying assessment gear, collecting and analyzing fishery data, maintaining gear and equipment, and various mechanical, electrical, and construction duties. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Fishery Technician I will assist the Fisheries Biologist & Lead Fisheries Tech with the following tasks: 1. Collecting fishery data during routine stock assessment and commercial harvest monitoring activities. 2. Fish aging, diet analysis, and computer data entry. 3. Preparing and loading equipment and gear necessary for fieldwork. 4. Maintaining and repairing assessment gear, vessels, motors, equipment, and vehicles. 5. Completing equipment and gear inventories. 6. Performing general electrical, plumbing, and construction tasks. 7. Assisting with other Bay Mills Biological Services Program projects. 8. Supervising and training seasonal employees when necessary and applicable. 9. Other duties may be assigned within the scope and complexity of this position’s essential functions. 10. Must attend all mandatory trainings. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position may require working during adverse weather conditions. Fieldwork and/or office duties may require the employee to begin early in the morning, work late into the evenings, and travel long distances. Heavy lifting (> 100 pounds) will be required and the employee should be in good physical condition. POSITION REQUIREMENTS: 1. High School Diploma or equivalent. 2. Must have valid drivers license and excellent driving record. 3. Identification of Great Lakes fish species and fish anatomy. 4. Should be familiar with commercial and assessment gear necessary to capture and/or sample fish populations. 5. Knowledge of net mending and construction. 6. Maintenance and repair of gasoline engines, outboard motors, snowmobiles, ATV’s and vehicles. 7. General electrical, plumbing, and construction techniques. 8. Familiar with computer software including spreadsheets and databases. 9. Must be able to communicate clearly with supervisors and the public during normal work hours. 10. Must have an excellent past work record. 11. To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each function listed under the essential functions and physical demands categories of this position description.
