THE COLLECT FOR THE DAY
If you are new to the parish or
worshipping with us for the first time
please introduce yourselves to a member
of the clergy or one of our churchwardens
or sidespeople. This sheet gives some
words that will be needed in the services
and notices about the life of the church
communities. Please do take it home.
God of constant mercy,
who sent your Son to save us:
remind us of your goodness,
increase your grace within us,

FIRST READING Joshua 24.1-2a, 14-18
Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of
Israel to Shechem, and summoned the
elders, the heads, the judges, and the
officers of Israel; and they presented
themselves before God. And Joshua
said to all the people, ‘Thus says the
Lord, the God of Israel: Long ago your
ancestors - Terah and his sons Abraham
and Nahor - lived beyond the Euphrates
and served other gods.
‘Now therefore revere the Lord, and
serve him in sincerity and in
faithfulness; put away the gods that
your ancestors served beyond the River
and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. Now
if you are unwilling to serve the Lord,
choose this day whom you will serve,
whether the gods your ancestors served
in the region beyond the River or the
gods of the Amorites in whose land you
are living; but as for me and my
household, we will serve the Lord.’
Then the people answered, ‘Far be it
from us that we should forsake the Lord
to serve other gods; for it is the Lord
our God who brought us and our
ancestors up from the land of Egypt,
out of the house of slavery, and who
did those great signs in our sight. He
protected us along all the way that
we went, and among all the peoples
through whom we passed; and the
Lord drove out before us all the
peoples, the Amorites who lived in the
land. Therefore we also will serve the
Lord, for he is our God.’
PSALM 34.15-end
15 The eyes of the Lord are on the
righteous, and his ears are open to
their cry.
16 The face of the Lord is against
evildoers, to cut off the remembrance
of them from the earth.
17 When the righteous cry for help,
the Lord hears, and rescues them from
all their troubles.
18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in
spirit.
19 Many are the afflictions of the
righteous, but the Lord rescues them
from them all.
20 He keeps all their bones; not one of
them will be broken.
21 Evil brings death to the wicked, and
those who hate the righteous will be
condemned.
22 The Lord redeems the life of his
servants; none of those who take
refuge in him will be condemned.
GOSPEL John 6.56-69
Those who eat my flesh and drink my
blood abide in me, and I in them. Just
as the living Father sent me, and I live
because of the Father, so whoever eats
me will live because of me. This is the
bread that came down from heaven,
not like that which your ancestors ate,
and they died. But the one who eats
this bread will live for ever.’ He said
these things while he was teaching in
the synagogue at Capernaum. When
many of his disciples heard it, they
said, ‘This teaching is difficult; who can
accept it?’ But Jesus, being aware that
his disciples were complaining about it,
said to them, ‘Does this offend you?
Then what if you were to see the Son
of Man ascending to where he was
before? It is the spirit that gives life;
the flesh is useless. The words that I
have spoken to you are spirit and life.
But among you there are some who do
not believe.’ For Jesus knew from the
first who were the ones that did not
believe, and who was the one that
would betray him. And he said, ‘For
this reason I have told you that no one
can come to me unless it is granted by
the Father.’ Because of this many of
his disciples turned back and no longer
went about with him. So Jesus asked
the twelve, ‘Do you also wish to go
away?’ Simon Peter answered him,
‘Lord, to whom can we go? You have
the words of eternal life. We have
come to believe and know that you are
the Holy One of God.’’
PARISH NOTICES
Church Hall - We have often said the lack of a church hall
inhibits our community and its mission. This property,
directly opposite the Christ Church, has recently come
onto the market, c. £750k, and we ‘own’ the building next
door. Is this part of God's plan for us ……?
Holy Communion at 8am - This service will resume on Sunday 6 September.
United All Age Worship - The 10.30am service on Sunday 6 September will be with
Esher Green Baptist Church and will be outside on Esher Green itself. Please do join us
for this ecumenical celebration of God’s creation.
Harvest - Our 10.30am Harvest celebration on Sunday 4 October will take place at and
with Esher Church School, followed by a picnic/BBQ.
Healing Eucharist’s - There will be healing Eucharistic celebrations on Sunday 18 October
as we celebrate St Luke the Evangelist.
Bishop Ian’s Farewell Service - Bishop Ian will be retiring as Bishop of Dorking at the end
of September. There is a special service on Sunday 6 September at 3pm at Guildford
Cathedral. If interested please complete sign-up sheet - we need to provide numbers.
Garden of Remembrance - Now finished and looking lovely - please do take a look.
Many thanks to the donors who made this possible and also to Rosemary Elliott and
James Worthington for leading the project.
West End Summer Show - The show is next Saturday at 1.45pm. We would love to exceed
last year’s figure of £2,000. Can you help on Friday or Saturday or, alternatively, can you
bake some cakes or scones. If you can please see sign-up sheets. Thank you.
Esher Parish Bake Off! - Every second Sunday of the month (starting from 13 September)
Christ Church will be selling cakes and cookies to raise money for the Parish. Each month
we will be looking for volunteers to whip up a few delights! Can you help? If so, please
drop Jane an email at mrssladen@gmail.com or simply bring along your bakes on the day!
Ride & Stride - We will be opening up Christ Church on Saturday 12 September for the
annual Ride & Stride. It would be fabulous if both churches can be opened up for the
event offering refreshments. We were also wondering if any brave people would feel like
stepping forward to take part in the local Ride & Stride route to raise money for the Parish.
You can walk as well as cycle. Here also within the Parish we hope to organize a short
family event following a safe residential route from Christ Church to West End.
Richmond Running Festival - Three church members, Rob Pearson, Sally Smitherman and
Jane Sladen, will be running the half marathon on Saturday 6 September to raise money
for our Parish. Please do sponsor, support and wish them luck. A very brave trio!
Noah’s Ark - Noah’s Ark has docked and will set sail again on Sunday 13 September.
If you need to please feel free to use the rooms at the back of the church.
Please stay for coffee or tea after the service.
