Jesus Sends Power from God Preschool – April 25 & 29, 2012 Bible Point: God gives us the Holy Spirit. Bible Background: Acts 2:1-21 (Spark Story Bible, pp. 502-503) BIBLE STORY EXPLORATION: Supplies: paper fan Last week we learned that Jesus is alive and we can believe in him. But Jesus stayed with his friends for only a little while. Then he went to make a special home for his friends. Jesus' friends were very sad to see him go, but Jesus said he would send the Holy Spirit to be with them. He told them that the Holy Spirit would teach them how to tell others about him. Jesus' friends believed him, so they waited. Stop talking and wait. Do you like waiting? What do you do when you have to wait? Jesus' friends prayed for the Holy Spirit to come while they were waiting. Let's pray like Jesus' friends' prayed. Ask children to share things they would like to pray about. Say a short prayer, including everyone's concerns. We prayed together just like Jesus' friends prayed together. As they prayed they waited for God to answer. Let's see what the Bible tells us happened while they prayed and waited. Read the Bible Story, Spark Story Bible, pp. 502-503. Use the fan to blow children's hair at the beginning of the story. I wonder what it felt like to be blown by the Holy Spirit. Have children stand and pretend to be blown by the wind. Ask them to keep their feet in one place and move their body as if they were a plant blowing in the wind. The wind has lots of power. It can blow our bodies around. The Holy Spirit has lots of power, too. He moves our hearts. God gives us the Holy Spirit today, just like he gave the Holy Spirit to Jesus' friends. BIBLE APPLICATION ACTIVITY: Is It There? Supplies: cups, straws, pitcher of water, paper towels Put a small amount of water in a cup for each child. Give each child a straw and encourage them to gently blow bubbles. How are you making bubbles in the water? Can we see the air we blow? We can't see the air, but we know it's there. We can't see the Holy Spirit, but we can see what he does in the world. BIBLE EXPLORATION ACTIVITY: Windy Instrument Supplies: cardstock, crepe paper, tape, stapler, crayons/markers Give each child a piece of card stock. Allow them to decorate with crayons/markers. Help children tape 3 pieces of crepe paper to one end of the tube. Help children roll and staple the paper into a tube. Blow through one to show children how the air moves the paper streamers at the end. Let them blow and hum wind sounds. The Holy Spirit came to Jesus' friends like the rush of the wind. God gives us the Holy Spirit to be with us and to be our friend! BIBLE EXPLORATION ACTIVITY: Fly With the Wind Supplies: Music CD, CD player, children's Windy Instruments You can praise God while you hum and blow in your instruments and dance around. While we enjoy the music we can thank God for giving us the Holy Spirit. As time allows, play Hot and Cold – from time to time, stop the CD and say “cold.” Have children freeze like snowmen in a cold wind. Then start the CE and say “hot,” having the children melt and swirl around like a hot breeze. CLOSING BLESSING/PRAYER: Have students share prayer concerns. Over the past few weeks, our offering has been helping families in Africa stay safe and healthy. Our church has many wonderful friends in Africa. Just like the disciples in our story, they speak a language different than ours. When they say “Thank you,” they say “Asante” (a-SAHNtay). Let's all say “Thank you, Jesus” like our friends in Africa: Asante, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus, for the power of your Holy Spirit. Please help our offering help children in Africa be safe and healthy. In Jesus' name, Amen. Apr 25-29 preschool Guide Discussion and Activity 4/2012
