Job Summary: Newham Sixth Form College (New Vic) is London’s largest Sixth
Form College. It is a vibrant centre in the heart of the Olympic
host borough of Newham for sixth form education for students
from over 140 different schools from across London.
We have a vacancy for a full-time senior infrastructure
engineer within the network team. This post is of a highly
technical nature as reflected in this job description. The
following is a schedule of the key technical deliverables falling
within the remit of the post holder.



















Planning and maintaining Active Directory changes
Creating and rolling out network-wide group policies
Researching and testing of future infrastructure upgrades
Implementation and documentation of network
infrastructure
Supporting and updating Trend BMS facilities management
software
Configuration and updates to the Cisco ASA Firewall
appliance
Maintain Lenel Onguard card security system
Maintaining Print and Camera systems on the facilities
security system
Maintaining the wireless network infrastructure
Installing server updates and patches
Running network security audits and applying and patches
Maintaining the Exchange staff and student email system
Maintaining Syncback and Backup Assist synchronising
applications for business continuity
Updating and maintaining of VMware servers
Maintaining and updates to network documentation
Implementation and updating of remote support services
via HP Insight Manager and ILO
Importing and maintenance of the student Moodle system
Maintaining and backing up of all SQL servers
VB scripting and deploying msi’s

The post of senior infrastructure engineer is based within the
network team at the college. At NewVIc we strongly believe
in team working and see this as one of the reasons for our
success.
The senior infrastructure engineer will assist the network
manager and IT supervisor in ensuring that:
 IT support requests are effectively prioritised and promptly
and efficiently resolved in accordance with the network
team’s SLAs
 Planned maintenance, upgrades and backups are carried
out in a timely and complete manner and in accordance
with the teams’ SLAs and change control procedures so as
to minimise the amount of system ‘down time’
 Take a proactive, hand-on role in the resolution of second
and third level support calls
 Assist the IT manager in the planning and implementation
of new and enhanced IT services, including telephony

Assist the IT manager in ensuring that the IT team works
within agreed budgets and operating expenses and
budgets for capital projects
Assist the IT manager in the specification, pricing and
negotiation of all IT Projects to ensure that acquisitions are,
in every case, fit for purpose and best value for money
Assist the IT manager in setting an annual budget covering
the full scope of IT and telephony services to the college
Maintain a high level of awareness of new IT products and
processes and make recommendations for their
deployment at the college
Assist the IT manager in ensuring a robust, effective and
tested IT business continuity and disaster recovery plan
Participate in the college-wide IT group

These additional responsibilities apply to all NewVIc staff.
1. To attend regular team meetings.
2. To provide cover and support to colleagues within the
team during periods of absence and annual leave, as
required.
3. To participate in the college appraisal scheme and
arrangements for further training and development.
4. To apply and promote NewVIc’s policies and procedures
(e.g. health & safety, equal opportunities).
5. To deal with any enquiries, suggestions or complaints swiftly
and appropriately referring issues to Finance Manager if
necessary.

Excellent working knowledge of all aspects of IT systems
and networks, in particular the specific servers and
hardware used at NewVIc. Practical working
knowledge of the installation, configuration and
management of: HP San; HP brocade, cabling systems,
CAT5 and fibre-optic; Routers (ISDN, WAN, LAN);
bridges (ISDN, Local and Remote); switches and
filtering; SNMP Management (CISCO works); Symantec
Netbackup; VMware VSphere; Business Continuity; UPS
management and configuration; diagnostic
equipment (Protocol Analysers, etc.)


Other Information
Health and safety – all employees must comply with the requirements of the

Confirmation of appointment is subject to a satisfactory 10 month probation

adaptable in their approach and undertake other duties that are
commensurate with post holder’s level, wherever they may be, to achieve
the objectives of the college.
This post is based at Prince Regent Lane nut the post holder may be required
to move their base to any other location within the college at a future date.
Special Conditions
The post holder will be required to undertake an enhanced Criminal Records
Bureau (CRB) check. Criminal convictions will only7 be taken into account
when they are relevant to the post.
