The Dandrade Clan

Introduction and Thank You Notes

It has been several years since I started on this adventure of delving into my family genealogy. What I have found has intrigued me and in some cases shocked me, but also made more determined to find out even more. However that will take time, and without a doubt a journey to Madeira is a must!

First of all I would like to thank all those who have contributed to this family tree and without whose help this would not have been possible.

-Celeste DeAndrade Tranquada- Aunt Celeste was without a doubt my best source of information. Her memory is incredible and we spoke several different times on the telephone.

-Sylvina DeAndrade Rodrigues- My mother has also been a great source of information and

I have inflated my long distance bill by a considerable amount to get that information.

- Elvera DeAndrade Fernandes- Aunt Vera was the person that gave me the phone number of Carol DeAndrade Chung who lives in New York USA, which is where the link to Madeira came from. Without this information I would not have been able to contact Madeira.

-Belmira DeAndrade Howard- Aunt Belle was always willing to provide me with information on our family helping me to get on the right track.

-Angela DeAndrade Gonsalves- Aunt Angie was able to provide me with the information on how Uncle Charles was related to our family, and she also provided me with the most important Baptismal Certificate without which I would not have known who our ancestors were.

-Joanne Rodrigues Chadirchi- My sister with whom I spent many an hour on the phone from

England. She, being the first born of Roque's Grand Children was very knowledgeable on our family history. She like all the females in this family has an incredible memory for dates.

-Jacqueline Tranquada Shedlar and Eddie Shedlar- Jackie and Eddie's visit to Madeira was for me the icing on the cake. It confirmed our link to Madeira and provided me with much additional information on the family there. I thank them for that!!

-Richard Tranquada- Richard was kind enough to give us access to his plotter at work and provide us with a printed copy of the tree.

-Carol De Andrade Chung- Carol and I spent many phone calls talking about the family. It is her knowledge and information that provided me with the link to Madeira, a link that I once thought was broken forever. I really appreciate all her help.

-Graca Martins Santos & Ligia Martins Faria- Graca and Ligia are our cousins that Jackie and Eddie visited with in Madeira. They provided us with much additional information about our family in Madeira and also a branch of the family that was previously unknown.

-Benedict Lopes- Benny was very helpful in getting me information on all the descendants of

Antonio DeAndarde. Thank you Benny!

-Rick Barletta- Rick has done an extraordinary amount of work to glean all the information from the records from Madeira through the Mormon Church going all the way back to 1780 in Madeira. I can't even hazard a guess as to how long it must have taken him to do this especially as all the records are written in Portuguese and in the hand writing of the Parish

Priest at the time the record was documented. Thank You Rick wherever you are!

1

-All of you-for providing all the information that makes up this family tree.

-Debbie Rodrigues-Last but definitely not least, my wife and best friend. Her love and support and considerable patience are a source of strength to me and without which I would not have been able to do this. Thank You Deb!

Where to now? Well no doubt the next step is for me personally to visit Madeira to see if I can discover any more secrets from the "ARQUIVO REGIONAL DA MADEIRA".

CHAPTER 1

The story of the Dandrade Clan begins on the Island of Madeira located in the Atlantic Ocean south west of Portugal directly west of Morocco in Africa.

Madeira was discovered in 1419 by the Portuguese who called it ” Ilha da Madeira” or in

English “Island of Timber”. The island was densely covered in forests and quite impassable to the explorers. The captain of the ship João Gonçalvez Zarco set fire to the forest before leaving to return to Portugal and apparently it burned for seven years. This is the reason the

Madeiran soil is extremely fertile and the grapes grown there are of the highest quality. For more information on Madeira follow this link. http://home.online.no/~nancys/portugal/madeira/index.html

Madeira was the land of our ancestors but one has to wonder why did the Portuguese emigrate to Demerara or Guyana as it is called today.

As we know Roque de Andrade went to British Guiana and became a successful businessman married Philomena DeFreitas and fathered many children.

Why did he choose to go British Guiana and not America as his sister Marie did? He was sixteen years old when he arrived in Demerara in the year 1906.

To appreciate this story it is useful to have an insight into the life and the problems faced by the Portuguese in British Guiana.

Below is a bit of history as to why the Madeirans left and how they ended up in British

Guiana.

3

Note: A short history of the Madeirans who went to British Guiana will give you some incite into what they had to deal with and the reasons they left Madeira. it is an excerpt from the book by Sister Mary Noel Menezes “The Portuguese of Guyana” written in 1992.

On May 3, 1835, the first Portuguese landed in what was then British Guiana. In commemoration of that event, Sr M. Noel Menezes looks at the early Portuguese, and the skills they brought with them from Madeira.

By Sr M. Noel Menezes, R.S.M – Stabroek May 7 th

. 2000

In the 1830s and into the 1850s Portugal was undergoing a series of crises – recurring civil wars between the Constitutionalists and the Absolutists, the repercussions of which were felt in Madeira. Many young men jumped at the opportunity to get out of Madeira at any cost and thus evade compulsory military service as Madeira was considered part of metropolitan

Portugal. Also, more and more, poverty was becoming a harsh reality of life on the thirtyfour mile long, fourteen mile wide island of 100,000 inhabitants. During the first decade of the nineteenth century life for the peasant, the colono who worked the land for the lord of the manor, had become even harder.

Madeira had been discovered in 1419 by Joao Goncalves Zarco under the auspices of Prince

Henry, the Navigator, and by 1425 it had been settled. Prince Henry, son of Joao 1 of

Portugal and patron of exploration, an unusually far-seeing and intellectual prince of his age and of many centuries beyond, was responsible for the introduction of the sugar-cane from

Sicily to Madeira. By 1456 the first shipment of sugar was sent to England, and by the end of the century the burgeoning sugar industry was helping Madeira to play a prominent role in the commerce of the period. Bentley Duncan claims:

The Madeiran capital of Funchal

“By 1500, when Madeira had reached only its seventy-fifth year of settlement the island had become the world’s greatest producer of sugar, and with its complex European and African connections, was also an important centre for shipping and navigation.”

After 1570 the sugar trade began to decline as it faced competition from the cheaper and better-refined Brazilian product. Also the industry had been bedevilled by soil exhaustion, soil erosion, expensive irrigation measures, destruction by rats and insects, and ravaging by plant diseases.

4

As sugar declined in international trade the wine trade took precedence. Here again Madeira owed its name as a famous wine-producing country to the enterprises of Prince Henry who introduced the vine from Cyprus and Crete. The ‘Madeira’ of Madeira took its place with the port of Oporto on the tables of the world. It was soon discovered that the rolling of the ship added to the rich quality of the wine, and in the 17 th

and 18 th

centuries no ship left the island without a large consignment of pipes of Madeira for the West Indies and England, the largest consumers. In the 19 th

century wine was being shipped from Madeira to the United States,

England, the West Indies, the East Indies, France, Portugal, Denmark, Cuba, Gibraltar,

Newfoundland, Brazil, Africa and Russia. By the late 19 th century St Petersburg, Russia, vied with London in its consumption of Madeira. But as with the sugar industry so too with the viniculture. The vines were often demolished by diseases. In 1848 the oidium ravaged the plants, and by 1853 vine cultivation was almost totally abandoned. Twenty years later, the phylloxera, which also nearly ruined the French wine industry, crippled the vines.

Portuguese family, circa 1920s

The Madeiran peasant, in particular, owed his existence and that of his family to his job as a sugar-worker, a vine-tender or a borracheiro (transporter of wines in skins). No wonder when catastrophe continuously hit those crops, “the peasant, descending from the sierra with his bundle of beech sticks for the beans, and occasionally stopping to rest at the turns in the paths, casts his glance at the sea horizon and, in spite of himself, begins to feel the winged impulse to disimprison himself in search of lands where life would be less harsh.” (de

Gouveia)

Thus the Portuguese emigrant who came to British Guiana was the inheritor of a more than

300 year legacy of sugar production and viniculture. He was also a “thrifty husbandman of no small merit” (Koebel) utilising every inch of available space of the terraced hillsides to grow peas, beans, cauliflower, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, spinach, pumpkin, onion and a vast variety of fruits. Thus it is surprising to read in Dalton’s history that agriculture was not the forte of the Portuguese! What is even more surprising is the somewhat grudging concession made to the commercial enterprise of the emigrants. Significant among the reasons given for their meteoric rise to prominence in the retail, and later the wholesale trade in British Guiana, is the over-emphasis on the “preferential treatment” accorded them by the government of the day. It was “the patronage of the European elite [which] was the spark that ignited

Portuguese initiative and secured ultimate success” (Wagner). To continue this train of thought – the government and planters regarded the Portuguese as allies against the Creoles.

Yet it seemed that this European patronage boomeranged as later one is told that as the commercial power of the Portuguese grew they “became a threat to European elite’s dominion.”

5

Portuguese shop at Parika, circa 1920s

One is left to conjecture whether the Portuguese in British Guiana would ever have risen in the mercantile trade had not the government and planters paved the way for them. Yet an investigation of Portuguese-Madeiran history indicates a long familiarity with trade and the tricks of trade. The Madeirans were heirs to a dynamic trade system that had its roots in 14 th century Portugal when Lisbon was the important Atlantic seaport carrying on a vigorous trade with the Orient and Europe. Nineteenth century sources reveal an incidence of shopkeepers on the island with writers commenting caustically on those “wily creatures”

(shopkeepers) imbued with the spirit of swindling. One observer on the island wrote: “They can work like horses when they see their interest in it, but they are cunning enough to understand the grand principle of commerce, to give as little, and receive as much as possible.” A plethora of shops on the island, some of which date back to earlier centuries, attests to the fact that the Madeirans were no novices in business.

The British presence in trade and industry was ubiquitous but by the eighteenth century native jealousy had become very overt. By 1826 Madeirans were strongly objecting to “the almost monopoly of trade of the island in the hands of British merchants.” (Koebel) Possibly then the Madeiran merchant in British Guiana might have argued that the British merchants there owed him patronage in return for the privileges their counterparts had been receiving in

Madeira for over two centuries!

Immigration Office return for the number of Portuguese landed between January 23 and October 14, 1841

The Madeiran emigrant then, did not arrive in British Guiana devoid of everything but his conical blue cloth cap, coarse jacket, short trousers and his rajao (banjo). As did all other immigrants he brought with him a background history in agriculture, a flair for business, as well as the culture and mores of his island home, a replica of the mother country, Portugal.

He brought with him, not only his family, but in many cases his criado (servant), his deep faith, his love of festivals, his taste in food, the well-known pumpkin and cabbage soup, the celebrated oorish dish, cus-cus, the bacelhau (salted fish), cebolas (onions) and alho

(garlic). These tastes and many other customs became incorporated into the life of the

6

Guianese. Very early the Catholic faith was carried throughout the country and wherever the

Portuguese settled churches were built; the major feast days were celebrated, as they were and still are in Madeira, with fireworks and processions. As the Register of Ships notes, throughout the nineteenth century ships plied between Madeira and British Guiana, ships chartered by the Portuguese themselves, bringing in their holds cargoes of bacelhau, cus-cus, cebolas, alho and wine, as well as new emigrants.

The success and prosperity of the Portuguese within a short span of time and out of proportion to their numbers (in a total population of 278,328 in 1891 they numbered only

12,166 or 4.3 per cent), whether due to “preferential treatment” or not, brought in its train economic jealousy among the Creole population, erupting in violence within fifteen years of their arrival in the colony. Later, when the Portuguese began to oust the European merchant in the wholesale trade, they felt the brunt of European envy which manifested itself in many subtle and overt ways.

Portuguese businessmen, circa 1920s

Though the whites, grudgingly acknowledged the economic supremacy of the Portuguese, at no time did they accord them social supremacy or draw them into their privileged group. This attitude undoubtedly hurt and embittered the Portuguese who considered themselves

Europeans. But this did not hamper them or cripple their expectations or ambitions. Although from the very outset the local authorities, both Church and State in Madeira, tried to dissuade their countrymen from leaving the island, the émigré returning with his earnings, on the other hand, encouraged his brethren to cross the Atlantic and find their E1 Dorado in Demerara.

Today it seems that “the winged impulse” has again overtaken the Portuguese, and many have crossed the ocean in search of another E1 Dorado – in the north. Maybe it is the resurgence of the spirit of the early Portuguese explorers who lived to the hilt the motto of their Prince: “Go farther.”

CHAPTER 2

The Dandrade Clan:

Note: The stories below are not mine, they are the memories of mostly my mother Sylvina,

Celeste and also my sister Joan Anne and others mentioned from time to time.

The purpose of this booklet is to document the Dandrade Clan, names, dates and little stories as they relate to each individual. Primarily I am concerned with the descendants of Joao De

Andrade the father of Roque my Grand father. Prior to my research, all that was known were the names of Roque’s siblings. Nothing was known of his forefathers. I will give a little information about each of his siblings, and their descendants as much as I know. It is not my intention to delve deeply into the other branches of the “ Clan “ simply because, it is too huge. Below is an excerpt taken from a web site created by Richard Barletta who researched the d’Andrade genealogy.

Note: It will help if you refer to the above chart as you read on.

Antonio de Andrade:

The first person from the Dandrade Clan to go to British Guiana was Antonio de Andrade.

He was the son of Francisco de Andrade and Felisberta Rosa and brother of Joao de Andrade.

He is not mentioned in the chart above because I believe he was missed by Richard. What is known is that Roque traveled to British Guiana to work for his Uncle whose name was

Antonio. This has been verified by Denise D’Andrade in Barbados who had done her own research. Roque’s Uncle must therefore be his Father’s brother. So I am confident Richard missed Antonio during his research. I will confirm this later.

* Antonio , traveled to Demerara by ship in 1877 at the age of twelve. He was accompanied by a young couple named Manoel da Silva and Maria Roza and was listed as a “criado” which means male servant. Maria was possibly related to Filesberta as there surname was the same.

Antonio de Andrade

9

Antonio was born in 1864 and died in Georgetown in 1930 . He married Adelaide de Abreu and they had 8 children. There were five girls and three boys. One of the daughters was Mary

Lily de Andrade who married Ayres Julius Lopes and had a child Benedict Lopes.

Benny was helpful in tracking down all the names and dates for that branch of our family tree.

Below is a link to the web site that has documented all of this information. The site is the work of Rick Barletta who is a descendant of Maria Gomes de Andrade who immigrated to

Boston around 1911. He got all of his information from the records from Madeira through the

Mormon Church in the United States. He now lives in Florida and owns a photographic studio. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/1730/Andrade1.htm

Joao de Andrade:

Joao de Andrade

born Mar 6/1859 in Sao Roque Funchal Madeira. His parents were

Francisco de Andrade and Felisberta Rosa. He married Luiza D’Encarnacao Nov 9,1889 and

1 year later almost to the day their first son Roque was born.

The names of the six children are Roque b. 7 Nov /1890 ; Maria b. 12 Dec/1891; Joao b.

Mar 13/1893; Antonio b. 15 Jun/1894 ; Manuel b. 2 May/1895 ; Jose b. 20 Nov/1897 .

Of the six children, two immigrated to British Guiana (Roque and Manuel) and were in business together there, two went to the United States (Maria and Jose). Antonio remained in

Madeira farmed the land belonging to the family, where his descendants now live.. Not much is known of the last son Joao, he presumably remained in Madeira and was married to Marie.

Roque De Andrade:

Roque De Andrade

We know that young Roque left Madeira either to escape the draft, or because there were no job opportunities in Madeira. He chose British Guiana because his father’s brother

Antonio was living there and had prospered.

10

Apparently on a vacation back to Madeira, Antonio brought two of his daughters dressed to the hilt and exuding all the trappings of wealth. My mother Sylvina remembers he was in fact offered a job in British Guiana managing one of Antonio’s stores in Georgetown.

He traveled to Demerara in 1906 when he was 16 to work for his Uncle Antonio.

He worked as a cabin boy on a banana boat as he could not afford the cost of the fare on a passenger ship.

Saltbeef shop in Georgetown

On arrival in Georgetown he was placed in charge of one of the shops and his remuneration was half the profits. He worked hard and saved his money because he was subsequently able to open his own store.

Roque slowly over a period of years built his business to a point where he reportedly owned and operated seventeen different shops throughout Georgetown and the surrounding countryside. Needless to say he had to have many employees working for him. Managing these employees was an area where he excelled, but he was also very adept at the mundane tasks of stock taking (inventory counting) in all the stores. This was done on a rotational basis. Each week he went to a different store, and after it was closed on a Wednesday afternoon, as was the custom, he and his employees would count everything in the store and then he would compare it to the sales for the week to see if he had made any money.

Apparently he had the ability to envision a loss just by looking at the store shelves knowing what the sales had been for the past week.

Roque was not shy in firing employees that he perceived to be robbing him. However he had a soft heart and would often give that employee a second chance should the wife come crying at the house in Brickdam.

One of the most interesting locations was on the Demerara River on the road to the airport near Grove. Grove was mostly a rum shop where the locals gathered to eat and drink on a daily basis. He brewed and bottled his own rum there, and this was stored in wooden casks in a dark room at the rear of the building. This location had it’s own generator in a small building on the property close to the river. It was gas powered and very noisy as I recall.

Roque married Philomena DeFreitas (daughter of Manoel de Freitas and Josephine Martins) and had eight children, although only six survived to adulthood. Of his children five were female. So you can imagine five daughters to get married, it is no wonder that he loved to have a few drinks at the end of the day.

So therein lies a problem, with five daughters to be married, and seventeen stores to manage which are open all day on Saturday what is one to do.

There was only one solution, “ no weddings on a Saturday

”. I can only imagine the problems this created. Nevertheless there seemed no end to the number of potential suitors that were lining up at the front gate of 7 Brickdam Road Georgetown.

Roque and Philomena as was said had all girls except one boy who was named John.

Unfortunately two of the children Adelaide and Angeline died in the first few months of their

11

life. The eldest of the surviving girls was Celeste, then my mother Sylvina, John, Angela,

Belmira and Elvera all suitable Portuguese names. There were also twins, which were lost during the pregnancy. This loss occurred when Roque was away in Madeira for one of his few visits to the Island since leaving as a sixteen year old.

Sacred Heart RC Church

Georgetown

Lost to fire a few years ago.

As a result of this union there have been as of today more than 92 off spring. There are 8 children, 24 grand children, 41 great grand children, and 19 great great grand children.

Roque also had a son “Ignatius” from an earlier romantic meeting with an Amerindian lady.

He was very fair with his son providing him with an education and financial support. He was also given a job to run one of the stores. He and his children remained in Guyana and not much else is known of them.

Roque was a generous person and always willing to help his family. His brother Antonio had two sons, John and Joseph who came to Guiana in much the same circumstances as he did with the exception that he welcomed them into his home and gave them jobs in his business which by that time was flourishing. Joseph eventually was able to open his own store in

Kingston the northern area of Georgetown. John eventually immigrated to America.

Roque tragically died at the early age of 59 and his son John had to leave his job at the bank to run the business. He was apparently doing very well until about 9 months later a swimming accident at one of the beaches on the east coast of Guiana also tragically claimed his life.

These events unfortunately were the beginning of the end of the era of the De Andrade Clan in Guyana as one after another, all five of the sisters left with their families for greener pastures in Canada and England. That however is story for another book.

Maria de Andrade(Gomes):

Roque’s sister Maria married Manuel Gomes and had two boys John & Manuel before leaving Madeira around 1914 . It appears her parents were not in favour of the marriage and so they did not part on the best of terms.

12

Marie and Manuel left for Boston when their two sons John and Manuel were two years and six months old leaving them with her husband’s parents. Unfortunately young Manuel died shortly after, but John joined his parents in America in 1960 at the age of 50.

Marie never returned to Madeira but had six more children in Boston, and their names are

Anthony, Marita, Angelina, Joseph, Albert, and Alfred born between 1916

And 1932 in Boston. Altogether they had about 36 children and grand children.

One of Maria’s daughters was Angelina born in

1924 in Lowell MA. She married Angelo

Barletta and had a son Richard born 1943. Richard spent an incredible amount of time researching his Genealogy with the help of a professional Genealogist Patricia Julia Silva

Corbera .

I stumbled across Patricia’s web site on the Internet and after exchanging e mail with her over a period of time she led me to the discovery of Richard’s web site. The moment

I saw his site I was overwhelmed because here was the link to the “Boston Connection” I had sought for so long. Aunt Celeste had always told me about her Aunt in Boston and kept on saying

“ You can find the information on the internet”

. Little did she know how right she was, because Richard’s web site contained all the details I was missing. I have always wished

I could have made this discovery while Celeste was still alive. She would have been so excited to learn all the details I’m sure.

Richard’s site: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/1730/Andrade1.htm

Below is another link from an unknown author that documents some of this information from a different slant. It is quite obvious that the information here relates to our family as the names and dates correspond exactly. I believe this person is a grand daughter of one of

Marie’s children. However the information is not complete and misled me for a long time.

I broached the subject with Richard Barletta but he seemed to think that there was no relation. I think otherwise. You judge for yourself. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:a11207&id=I008

Below is an excerpt from this web site for those who do not have the Internet.

Name: Maria Luzia DA ENCARNACAO

Sex: F

Birth: 12 Dec 1891 in Sao Roque, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal

Death: 2 Oct 1970 in East Boston, Mass.

Father: Joao D'ANDRADE b: ABT 1860 in Sao Roque, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal

Mother: Luiza DA ENCARNACAO b: ABT 1860 in Sao Roque, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal

Marriage 1 Manuel GOMES b: 6 Oct 1887 in Sao Roque, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal

Married: 20 Nov 1909 in Sao Roque, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal

Note: She came from well to do people in Funchal , the capitol of Madeira Island,

Portugal. She had five brothers. She met grandpa, who was from a poor family. My

Great Grandfather would tell my grandfather to go away and leave her alone. He didn't think he was good enough for her, but love prevailed and they got married.

13

When they came to this country they left two sons, John 2yrs. & Manuel 6 mos., there with my Great Grandmother. My Great Grandmother convinced my Grandmother she would return soon. Manuel died after 6 mos. My Grandfather and Grandmother were never able to return to Madeira Island. John came to this country in 1960. 48 years had passed. He was 50 years old. There was a write up about it in the Boston Globe.

Joao de Andrade:

Born March 1893 died 1977 and was married to Maria Da Silva but had no children.

Antonio de Andrade:

Antonio de Andrade

Antonio the fourth child of Joao and Luiza married Augusta Roza June 1916. They had seven children Augistino, John, Joseph, Maria, Angelina, Belmira, and Lourdes in order of age.

They were born between 1919 and 1942. Belmira had eleven children one of which is Graca born 1956.

Graca was the cousin that Jackie and Eddie met while in Madeira. They also met many of the older folk all of which are the first cousins of Roque’s children.

According to Carol De Andrade all of these ladies live on land, which belonged to Antonio.

This land may have been passed down from Joao.

Two of Antonio’s sons went to live in British Guiana and worked with Roque. John married

Juliet Tranquada and immigrated to California until his death in December 2004, and Joseph married Beryl Yhap and had several children, one of which is Carol a nurse in New York. It is because of Carol that I was able to contact Graca in Madeira as Joseph her Dad, had taken her to meet the family in Madeira when she was a teenager.

14

Manuel de Andrade:

Angelina, Lourdes and Maria

Uncle Manuel came to British Guiana to work with his brother in the business. The date he arrived is not known, but he remained there until after his brother died in the late 1950’s and played a large part in the success of the business. He owned the saltbeef shop at the corner of

Light and Regent streets not far from where we lived on Croal Street.

I have a dim memory of visiting the shop at Christmas time and sitting on a bag of sugar.

Uncle Manuel married Gruicella in Madeira and returned with her to live in Georgetown.

They never had any children. After his brother died he did not like the political situation in

Guiana and so he decided to return to Madeira after selling his business. He had been the overall purchaser for the business and before leaving, he taught Uncle Gaston Fernandes the intricacies of his job so that he could take over those responsibilities. He returned to Madeira where he died around 1965 .

Jose de Andrade:

Jose followed his sister Maria to America and eventually settled on Lowell, Mass. and married Rose. He died there in 1977.
