Another very strong trade with few fresh sorts on offer, many staler types still selling well.
Dairy Breeds (34): A few less farmer buyers present and the medium types £10-£15 back
on last week. Best fresh calves sold to £142 for A W Jones, £130 for J D Wright & son and
A G Meredith & Partners. Medium types £65-£70, plainer types £30-£40.
2 Norwegian red calves made £142 and £125 for W F Fisher & Son, weaned calves sold to
£350 for Jerry Hobbs £235 for A G Meredith & Partners, avg £253.
Native Breeds (21): Angus bulls to 3270 from A G Meredith & Partners, £230 and £252 for
R J Handley & Son avg £240. A smart Gloucester Bull calf from Liz Best made £198 and
looked good value for money, Hereford heifers generally smaller types £175+ peaking at
£205 for M/s J Stagg & Son. Angus heifers a similarly good trade reaching £192 - £202 for
S & R Russell. A Welsh Black heifer from E J Evans made a good £292.
Simmental (13): Fresh bulls £385 fop from B Gough & Sons £340 for Rawlings & Davis
avg £326. Hefiers sold to a very strong trade £280, £300 and £302 from Rawlings & Davies
£262-£278 for B Gough & Sons, 8 avg £273. A weaned Simmnetal heifer from Jerry Hobbs
made £350.
Limousin (3): A short entry but worthy of mention with Liz Best’s fresh heifer calf making
a superb £370.
Belgian Blue (13): Again topping the class topping at £420 for J D Wright & Son, £402 for
D H & D R Smart 8 avg £324. Heifers also sold well reaching £285 and £295 for J & L
Garside avg £243. Strong weaned Belgian Blue’s from J A Hobbs sold to £440 (twice) and
£345.

A similar number forward with 123 cattle sold over £1000 & 115 cattle over 200p/kg.
The entry saw a larger percentage of stronger near meat cattle on offer which sold to
a very good trade. A grand run of British Blue steers from M/s S & W Ball, Charfield
sold to £1450 (199p/kg), £1325 (201p/kg) & £1250 (190p/kg) with British Blues to
£1300 (200p/kg) from Mr D Richardson, Besford. Blonde steers sold to £1300
(206p/kg) from Mr A Basson, Northleach & £1280 (215p/kg) & £1250 (200p/kg)
from M/s G & J Hyett, Whaddon. Charolais steers sold to £1240 (195p/kg) & £1230
(207p/kg) from Mrs H Whitcombe, Minety. The majority of the stronger cattle traded
over £1000 and around the 200p/kg mark. The stronger native breeds saw Hereford
steers to £1250 (192p/kg) again from M/s G & J Hyett, Whaddon with their Aberdeen
Angus steers to £1200 (185p/kg). The stronger dairy breeds saw Swedish Red steers
to £1055 (160p/kg) from M/s E Burson & Son, Grove.
The stronger near meat heifers were in short supply with Aberdeen Angus to £1195
(171p/kg) from M/s R & B Kingston & Sons, Wickwar & Simmental heifers to
£1015 (174p/kg) from M/s K & A Godwin, North Wraxhall. Many stronger heifers
traded between £850 - £950 (180 – 200p/kg)
The farming cattle (more stores than near meat sorts) were in shorter supply and met
a very good trade. A grand run of Continental steers & heifers from M/s K & A
Godwin, North Wraxhall saw Limousin steers to £1340 (217p/kg) with Simmental
steers to £1180 (195p/kg) & British Blue steers to £1170 (209p/kg). Simmental steers
from Miss B Chiswell, Winterbourne sold to £1225 (198p/kg) with Limousin steers
to £1140 twice (238p/kg) & (226p/kg) from Mr H J Caswell, Wanborough. The
native breeds saw Hereford steers to £1020 (189p/kg) from M/s Hazell & Jefferies,
Panbourne with Aberdeen Angus to £1020 (174p/kg) from Mr B Snell, Bucklebury.
The farming Friesian steers traded between £750 - £800 (145 -165p/kg) topping at
£875 (151p/kg) from M/s Breakspear & Son, Stanford Dingley.
The farming heifers were also in short supply but well sold with the best Continental
heifers over £900 topping at £965 (176p/kg) for British Blue’s from H T Purser Ltd,
Wendoverdean. Limousin heifers sold to £950 (183p/kg) & £930 (174p/kg) from M/s
K & A Godwin, North Wraxhall. The general farming heifers saw Continental’s £750
- £850 (180 – 205p/kg).Native breed heifers saw Aberdeen Angus to £810 (160p/kg)
from Mr A Young, Purton & £790 (170p/kg) from H T Purser Ltd, Wendoverdean.
The younger stores & weaned calves were again in demand. Charolais & Limousin
steers (11 – 12mnths) sold to £980 (224p/kg) & £970 (200p/kg) from Mr C Collins,
Upton Snodbury. Simmental steers (11mnths) sold to £900 (225p/kg) from Mr R

£1212 (800 kg at 152p) with 3 others making over £1,000 and 3 more at £900-£950.
Mainly medium Friesian cows on offer 695 kg to 109p mainly those on offer. 100-110p
generally, 3rd quality cows 78-95p a few plain cows 50-60p. Overage steers from L & M
Smith (675kg) to 201p £1353 620-660 kg, Angus steers £1045 - £1158 mainly 157ppkg+.
Overage heifers sold similarly well from H C Jones 685 kg at 194p £1325, Limousin to
£1075 also from H C Jones.

SQQ 212p/kg – Overall Average 195p/kg
The largest entry of prime hoggetts at Cirencester saw a good, firm trade with the
heavy hoggs making up a large percentage of the entry and selling some £5 a head of
many other local centres. The best handyweight export type hoggs traded between
215 – 225p/kg topping at 234p/kg £97.20 for 41½kg from Mr D T Parry. The middle
weight hoggetts were again well sold compared to many centres with the best sorts
trading between 190 – 210p/kg topping at 217p/kg £97.50 for 45kg from Mr A
Basson. The heavy weights traded at improved levels between £90 - £98 topping at
£105 for 67kg from Mrs H Whitcombe.

Overall Average - £85.25
A few more forward with the trade continuing at unbelievable levels. Overall average
was lower than previous weeks but due to the smaller & plainer ewes on offer. The
best good meated Suffolk & Continental x ewes sold between £105 - £119 topping at
£126, with Mules to £90 - £110. Overfat ewes saw a bit of resistance but still traded
around the £90 - £100 mark. The half meated & plainer ewes again traded between
£80 - £90. Small meated ewes or bigger plainer ewes traded between £65 - £85
generally. Slaughter rams sold to £113.
