Non-Tenure Track Faculty Committee Report to the Faculty Assembly Friday May 8, 2009 Committee members: Pamela Carter (Engineering/Computer Science), Suzanne Cook (LAS/Languages and Cultures), Justin Jory (LAS/English), Ceil Malek (LAS/English), Laura Marshall (Education), Trellis Moore (Bethel), Mary Bethe Neely (LAS/Chemistry), Sheri Trumpfheller (Business/Accounting) The Non-Tenure Track Faculty Committee met on April 17 and April 30 and presents the following report to the Faculty Assembly: 1. Open NTTF meeting: The NTTF Committee held an open meeting on Thursday April 30 at 4 PM in Dwire 204, with guest speaker Assistant Professor Sue Doe, from CSU. Sue Doe is an Associate Professor of English as well as a veteran of the NTTF ranks. Approximately 30 people attended the meeting, including administrators. We appreciate the presence and support of our Provost, Associate Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dean of LAS, and Chairs of the English and GES departments. - Prof Doe shared with participants the overall status of NTT faculty at CSU as well as early outcomes of a qualitative study of “special and temporary faculty” (i.e. NTTF) across 7 of the 8 colleges at CSU. - She highlighted the similarities and differences between the situation for non-tenuretrack faculty at UCCS and at CSU. There were striking parallels in the campuses’ actions over the past 10 years and also in the top concerns of faculty from survey results. Differences include the requirement at CSU that NTTF reapply for their jobs every year and their extensive annual evaluation of NTTF (more like a tenure-track requirement). - She emphasized the importance of building institutional support for NTTF (the CSU task force meets regularly with their Provost). - Time did not allow for a discussion of the progress made this year at UCCS. We did discuss CU-Boulder’s motion for tenure for instructors. The discussion raised questions that we intend to clarify by next Fall. - Given the interest shown at this meeting, we will plan another open meeting early next Fall. 2. NTTF Issues at Associate Deans’ Meeting: The next Associate Deans’ meeting involving NTTF issues will be Monday May 11. We will discuss draft documents developed by HR to establish termination and grievance processes for non-tenure-track faculty.
