General Accountability
The Experiential Coordinator/Instructor has a direct line report to the Associate Director, Practice-Based
Education and Professional Outreach and an administrative report to the Administrative Officer, School of
Pharmacy. The position’s primary responsibility will be to cultivate, develop and maintain the fourth year
Clinical Rotations for the PharmD program. This will include developing the 10-12 regional Communities
of Practice across the province and providing guidance to the Regional Clinical Coordinators who are
located in each Community of Practice. The Experiential Coordinator will interact with individuals, small
businesses and corporations in a wide variety of pharmacy practice settings including independent
community pharmacies, chain drug stores, acute and long-term care institutions, pharmacy consulting
services, Family Health Teams, ambulatory clinics and other health-care related organizations. The
Coordinator’s pharmacy experience and superior communication skills will be used to work with RCCs to
identify patient care sites that will provide excellent training and pharmacists who will serve as strong
mentors and teachers. As with other external representatives, the Coordinator acts as an ambassador for
the School of Pharmacy and the University of Waterloo.
The Coordinator will work closely with the Pharmacy Experiential Team in planning and implementing the
strategies to promote the clinical rotations of the PharmD program. The Coordinator may also interact
with the Director of Advancement, School of Pharmacy to help cultivate relationships with these
pharmacy groups. The Coordinator will also teach in appropriate pharmacy-practice courses, and may
participate in School of Pharmacy committees and other activities as assigned.
The School of Pharmacy/Health Sciences Campus at the University of Waterloo had its inaugural class of
Pharmacy undergraduate students graduate in 2011. It is situated on the Downtown Kitchener campus of
the University of Waterloo and is a collaborative project of the University and the City of Kitchener.
Anchored by the new School of Pharmacy, the campus includes a Family Medicine Teaching Centre that
combines clinical care, teaching and research in family medicine, a satellite medical school, an optometry
clinic, and other health related studies and services.
Specific Accountabilities








Recruit and coordinate RCCs across Ontario; ensure retention by managing RCC satisfaction
Work with Regional Clinical Coordinators (RCCs) to facilitate students’ placements for Clinical
Rotations and clinical site contracts
Develop and enhance RCC and preceptor recognition package for recruitment
Train RCCs regarding University of Waterloo academic and student policies, rotation
expectations, and management of challenging situations
Set up expectations and assessment for Clinical Rotations
Work with RCCs to ensure Clinical Rotation sites receive appropriate support, and are aware of
Pharmacy Clinical Rotation processes; coach RCCs on preceptor recruitment strategies and
managing effective Clinical Rotations; address escalated site issues or concerns (e.g. student
performance issues, etc.)
Develop marketing initiatives for Clinical Rotations
Manage general communications and materials for students, preceptors, Regional Clinical
Coordinators (RCCs), including relevant School of Pharmacy website content








Work with RCCs to ensure student/ preceptor visits while on Clinical Rotation (e-mail/ telephone/
Skype/ in person); attain student, preceptor and RCC feedback on Clinical Rotation
Work with Director to develop pharmacy Clinical Rotation policies and guidelines; consider
student exception requests for deviations from Clinical Rotation policies
Review quality assurance, and work with Director to ensure CCAPP accreditation standards are
met
Engage with external stakeholders (e.g. PEPC, OCP, etc.) as necessary
Teach in various courses at SOP
Participate on SOP Committee(s)
Cross-train regarding Co-op Experiential Coordinator duties
Other duties as assigned
