ABOUT THE WORK
I am an artist who works with wood and stone, lathe turning platters and vases from wood and then inlaying mineral crystals to
create images of striking beauty. I have merged the disparate techniques of woodturning and stone carving, resulting in work that
is unique both technically and in style. The pieces are made from highly figured woods where each design is inspired first by the
wood figure that presents itself and the best form to capture that figure. The inlay designs are uniquely hand carved and created
with layered translucent crystals. These designs and principally inspired by the changing seasons and natural beauty of the
Pacific Northwest as well as the traditional art forms of Japan.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Stephen Hatcher showed an early aptitude for realistic drawing at a very early age. Upon finishing high school he was earning
income painting murals in homes. Though art has held a lifetime interest for Stephen, several years at the University of
Washington lead to degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. During his 20 year career as an electronics entrepreneur
Stephen developed numerous cutting edge devices for the wireless communications industry. Retiring from this field in 2000,
Stephen returned to his interests in wood turning and stone carving. Merging these techniques led to his unique style of artwork.
