The department offers students: small classes and highly individualized advising, including detailed four-year degree completion planning, research and internship guidance, and career counseling research and internship opportunities through partnerships with federal, state and local government agencies, and the IT industry state-of-the-art facilities and equipment 80 undergraduate courses and more than 40 graduate courses serving approximately 1,200 undergraduate and graduate majors dynamic and accomplished faculty with research specialties in assistive technology, cybersecurity, automated reasoning, cryptography, data mining, decision support systems, distance learning, distributed computing, genomics, geographical information systems, human-computer interaction, information visualization, neural networks, universal usability, virtual collaboration, voice-over IP and wireless networks advantageous location in high-tech Baltimore/Washington corridor, near many national agencies and institutes, including Aberdeen Proving Ground, Goddard Space Flight Center, Space Telescope Science Institute, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Army Research Laboratory Cybersecurity Designations The Department of Computer and Information Sciences, with over 40 faculty and 1,200 undergraduate majors, started one of the first undergraduate cybersecurity tracks in the nation and the first in Maryland. We have been a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance and Cyberdefense since 2002. In 2013, Towson was designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations, one of only fifteen such institutions in the nation.
