PRESS RELEASE NET4GAS has completed the Reverse Flow project The Czech Republic’s energy security has been enhanced The Czech Republic’s capacity is sufficient to allow natural gas transmission from west to east In the European natural gas transmission business, NET4GAS is a strategic partner Prague, 30 June 2011 – NET4GAS has completed its three years lasting gas reverse flow project which is a fundamental contribution not only to the energy security of the Czech Republic but also to that of the Central European countries. “In case natural gas supplies coming from the usual, eastern direction are held, the Reverse Flow project will allow changing the direction speedily to send gas from west to east, thus providing sufficient capacity for countries like Slovakia or Austria,“ said NET4GAS Executive Jan Nehoda in this context. Besides, the overall transmission infrastructure benefits heavily from the NET4GAS west-east reverse flow project. In the direction from northwest to east, i.e. from the German-Czech to the Czech-Slovak border, (serving mainly Slovakia, Austria and Hungary), the transmission system’s daily capacity is 15 million m3 higher, so is the capacity in the south-west direction (supplies for Southern Germany – Bavaria). Technical implementation of the reverse flow itself necessitated a number of important technical measures. It was necessary to adjust accordingly the existing technology of the Hora svaté Kateřiny and Lanžhot border distribution stations as well as that of compressor stations and ‘distribution nodes’. Today, these measures allow transmitting natural gas from the Czech Republic also in the reverse flow while meeting all the parameters applicable to the volume and quality commercial metering, and securing sufficient transmission capacity for the Central and East European countries at the same time. A number of capex projects that NET4GAS, the transmission system operator, runs in parallel, rank the Czech Republic among the key countries playing an important role in securing the European Union’s energy NET4GAS, s.r.o. This contribution to diversification of energy sources is also why the European Union supported not only the Reverse Flow project but also the STORK project - a high-pressure pipeline connecting the Czech Republic to Poland - as well as the new connection of the Tvrdonice underground gas storage facility to the transmission system under the European Energy Programme for Recovery (EEPR). NET4GAS guarantees a non-discriminatory access to the transmission system for all natural gas traders. NET4GAS, s.r.o., transports natural gas in the Czech Republic through a system of 3,642 kilometres of pipelines. Natural gas is the most environmentally friendly of all non-renewable sources of energy. Unlike solid and liquid fuels, it does not burden the environment with any dangerous pollutants.
