JOB TITLE: Senior Careers Adviser

DEPARTMENT/SCHOOL/UNIT: Careers Service

REPORT TO:

JOB PURPOSE:

To co-ordinate and develop the provision of a specialist Careers Education, Information and Guidance

(CEIG) Service to students and recent graduates of the University in a quality assured manner.

MAIN ACTIVITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. To lead and co-ordinate a small team of staff to ensure the successful delivery of professional

CEIG Services, co-ordinating work activities to deliver specific objectives, ensuring agreed strategies, policies and business plans are implemented.

2. To use substantial professional/specialist knowledge, expertise, experience and professional judgement to facilitate and support the development of Career Management & Employability

Skills (CM&ES) in students in order to impact positively on the effectiveness of their transition from education to employment and University Performance Indicators.

3. To take the lead role in identifying, developing and implementing initiatives and projects which will have broad University impact, eg planning, designing, developing a programme of skills training for Postgraduate Research Students, developing CM&ES programmes.

4. Report to and participate in relevant University Committees to contribute to the development of policy, strategy and practice.

5. Maintain professional standards through membership of relevant professional association, eg

AGCAS, AGCSI, contributing to committee work at national level as agreed with Head of

Service.

6. Identify additional Service requirements or Service shortfalls and co-ordinate and/or design the delivery of innovative solutions to maximise Service quality, efficiency and continuity.

7. Generate original ideas and innovative solutions through the provision of specialist knowledge and advice as appropriate which will develop and enhance the work of the Service.

8. Manage monitoring and evaluation procedures and make appropriate interventions to meet both internal and external codes of practice and quality standards.

9. Advise on the need to assess complex situations, information or data and propose and lead on the development of possible solutions.

PLANNING AND ORGANISING:

Plan and organise individual/and or team activity with an appreciation of longer term issues, ensuring plans complement and feed into broader operational plans.

Project manage specialist/professional activities to facilitate major service/policy/operational changes with broad University impact.

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES (e.g. People, Finance, Equipment):

Manage resources within allocated project/area where appropriate to ensure maximum value is delivered for resources deployed.

Act as a mentor/coach to all colleagues, which may involve training staff, to support and develop their professional effectiveness.

May be considered as a ‘specialist’ in a specific area gained through a detailed understanding of the theory and /or principles underpinning the particular field of work.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Represent and/or promote the work area (and University) at both internal and external meetings/events to ensure that departmental/school/work unit issues are appropriately represented and acted upon.

Contact with other areas of the University to develop new/improved processes and support systems.

Interact internally and externally to generate ideas and co-ordinate policy/practice developments.

Maintain external links with professional and/or specialist bodies or groups.
