JOB SUMMARY FORM REF. NO: JOB TITLE: Careers Adviser DEPARTMENT/SCHOOL/UNIT: Careers Service REPORT TO: To provide specialist advice and guidance in relation to Careers Services information resources, systems and services relating to careers, employers, courses and job vacancies. 1. Provide careers education, information and guidance Service (CEIG) to students and recent graduated of the University so they can maximise resources available to them and choose realistic career paths. 2. Work closely with academic and administration staff to embed CEIG including career management skills into the curriculum. 3. Liaise with external bodies and employing organisations to improve knowledge, build relationships, keep up to date with recruitment trends in the profession and to expand the department’s portfolio of placement providers, e.g. Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS), Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland (ICAI). 4. Establish and maintain appropriate information systems, both manual and computerised ensuring they meet the recognised standards. 5. Contribute to planning, implementation and review of caseload work so that talks, seminars/workshops and individual consultations are offered within a School/department. 6. Assist in the administration of careers programmes and employer-related activities. 7. Prepare students for placement and facilitate students’ reflection on their learning post placement. 8. Co-ordinate and supervise the ordering, stock control, storage, classification and display of materials. 9. Carry out any other duties which are appropriate to the post as may be reasonably requested by Supervisor. PLANNING AND ORGANISING: Contribute to short or medium term developments within the Careers Service to support the achievement of project objectives. Devise appropriate departmental activity scheduling in order to meet targets. React daily to accommodate immediate customer needs. Planning is influenced by the academic year and employer expectations, fluctuating demand, student expectations, available resources and commitments of colleagues. RESOURCE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES (e.g. People, Finance, Equipment etc): Organise own specialist or professional work and advice to meet the department’s objectives. INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS Daily contact with Supervisor and work colleagues. Regular contact with University staff, students, members of the public and external employers and professional bodies and institutes.. Education and Qualifications A degree in relevant subject Postgraduate qualification in careers guidance 2. Experience Minimum 3 years’ experience in the delivery of guidance and advisory work or training and development programmes. Experience of working with students/recent graduates 3. Other Skills/Knowledge IT literacy e.g. email, word processing, internet 4. Presentation Good communication skills both oral and written. Able to communicate with and relate to people at all levels both internally and externally. 5. Personal Qualities Well developed planning and organisation capabilities. 6. Special Factors and other Requirements Willingness to work irregular hours as reasonably required.
