We had a priest leading us from Bethlehem to Calvary. At each site, we celebrated the holy sacrifice of the Mass. At one of the sites near the Sea of Galilee, this priest talked about the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. Today’s reading from John brings back memories for me and the unique explanation this priest gave to our group of 17 pilgrims. When I first heard the explanation, I thought it was a more modern day approach to this gospel account and I was able to understand this version as another form of miracle. Right now I am in a bible study group where we just spent three years studying the very short gospel readings of Mark. We only reviewed a couple of verses at a time and that’s why it took us three years. Because Mark’s gospels are so short, today we are hearing and interrupter from the gospel of John. I have learned many interesting facts about these readings in this class and one of them concerns the kophinos which is Greek for the bottle shaped basket in which the people in Christ’s time would carry Kosher food for their long journeys. This was the case in this reading from John. When it became apparent to the apostles that the people might not have enough food as they sat around listening to Christ, they found a young boy who had a small number of barley loaves and fishes in his basket. What the priest on our pilgrimage explained was that Jesus, by sharing the boy’s bread and fish, gave example to the crowd of 5000 people that sharing would enable all to eat adequately and renew their strength after the long day of travelling and listening to Him. And that’s just what they did….they followed the example of Jesus. Isn’t that exactly what Jesus did during His entire public ministry? He shared his life with us by living on this earth for 33 years, shared the love of his father in everything he did and said, and ultimately, by His death on the cross, gave us a share in the salvation of heaven. That in itself is a beautiful miracle! ~~~~~~Jeanette Zak . 17th Sunday Sunday, 11am Danny Clark in ordinary time July 26, 2015 Mass Schedule / Intentions for the Week This Weekend, July 25-26 Saturday, 5:00pm Sunday, 9am Sunday, 11am Pearl & Valette Proctor (D) Pro Populo James Lynch (L) This Week, July 27-August 1 Monday, 8am Tuesday, 8am Wednesday, 8am Thursday, 8am Friday, 8am Saturday, 8:30am Lillian Caplans (L) Mark & Liz Closson (L) Dorothy Buckner (D) Gladys Benton (L) Jeni Stepanek (L) Carole E. The reading from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians: • Calls us to “live with humility.” Humility means to accept all that you are and all you are not. Relax. You do not have to be God in order to be beloved. Lives that have to be huge and greatly respected and listened to and in control are based on fear, not humility. Try to accept the love God has for you, the love that makes you safe. You are who you are. • It calls us to “live with gentleness.” This can be a little more difficult. But relax. God is the gentlest acceptor of all. You are enough. You are loved by God, who is infinitely gentle. • It calls us to “live with patience.” Patience can be defined as “bearing pains or trials calmly or without complaint.” This is good enough, but did you know that the Latin origin of the word patience (patior) means “to allow”? God gives us ourselves one minute at a time, one hour at a time, not all at once. Each moment, each flower, each step is precious, if we let it be. Accept the gifts of the compassionate giver and let it be. • It calls us “to bear with one another through love.” Think how wonderful it would be if someone were to bear with you, even when you mess up. You would not have to be anything but your own adequate self, loved by God, able to bear up under the surprisingly light burden of loving others. • It calls us “to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace.” ~ Redacted, John Foley S.
