I Love You More Than Poem
Poetry writing lesson for day 112 of the 180 day sequence. Students will use Jack
Prelutsky's poem entitled, "I Love You More Than Applesauce" as a template to
modify and create their own.

Step: 1 Duration: 10 min
The teacher will introduce children to poetry lesson by reading "I Love You More
Than Applesauce" by Jack Prelutsky.

Step: 2 Duration: 15 min
The students will read their own copies of the poem and identify rhyming words by
highlighting them in the same color. The students will read the poem aloud and clap to
the rhythm of the poem.
Step: 3 Duration: 40 min
The students create their own version of the poem by using the writing process to
complete the poem template entitled "I Love You More Than..." by Jack Prelutsky and
_____________.

Step: 4 Duration:
The children will proceed through the writing process to edit, revise, and check for
rhyme and rhythm. The children can check for rhythm by orally reading their poems
and clapping to the syllables/beat.
Step: 5 Duration: 30 min
This step is optional. The students may type their poems into a word processing
template and choose any color font to distinguish between the template and their own
words. The students may use different colors to highlight rhyming words as well.
Step: 6 Duration: 5 min
The students will complete the poem checklist to evaluate themselves.

Students will illustrate poems and mount onto construction paper to display.
