Role of Department The Neonatal Unit is part of the integrated maternity service based at Ayrshire Maternity Unit. There are 3,713 babies delivered per year within the hospital. The level 3 Neonatal Unit consists of : 5 cot intensive care area 4 cot high dependency area 11cot special care area 2 isolation rooms Neonatal Homecare Team providing support at home for parents of recently discharged premature infants As part of the integrated Maternity Service the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit provides on site family centred care for parents of ill premature babies. The unit provides 24 hour neonatal care for ill, premature infants and their families. There are approximately 440 admissions to the unit per annum. The unit is consultant led providing full neonatal intensive care services on a 24-hour basis also providing routine and advanced neonatal life support to theatre and delivery suite and attendance at all high risk deliveries within these areas. The specialised neonatal staff advises and provides expert clinical support in all areas of the Maternity Unit in the event of any neonatal emergency. The Unit is part of a Scottish Neonatal network that participates in the Scottish Neonatal Bed Bureau which assists in facilitating the procurement of an intensive care cot for any unit that is unable to admit an ill or premature baby due to there being no cots available in the mothers booking unit. 6. PHYSICAL : On most of the shifts worked, the post holder will be involved in: Performing highly complex medical procedures while standing in a restricted position over incubators and cots Walking/standing for majority of shift, can be in excess of 7 miles per day Adapting to changing shift patterns Use of computer keyboards and VDU screens Frequent lifting, moving of moderate weights including equipment >25kg for short periods Frequent moving of cots and incubators Frequent bending at awkward angles to assist breast feeding mothers Frequent bending at awkward angles over cots to carry out nursing procedures Transporting sick or preterm infants receiving respiratory support using a transport incubator / resuscitaire which require manipulation en route Shifts frequently in excess of 10 hours Irregular breaks Breaks not bleep / pager free MENTAL : Concentration is required on every shift while undertaking intricate clinical care to neonates, including invasive procedures with little or no margin for error Frequent requirement for concentration is required as the workload is unpredictable and subject to very frequent interruptions from colleagues, parents and bleeps. Intense concentration required for prolonged periods when dealing with resuscitation, stabilisation and management of acute emergencies, balanced against other competing priorities The clinical condition of babies requiring neonatal care can change very quickly and requires meticulous attention to detail to ensure that any changes in condition are acted on immediately. This can result in an unpredictability of the workload, as there may be a requirement to change from one task to another to deal with these changes in condition. KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB The post holder will operate as an expert practitioner and will be in possession of a Masters degree: 1st level registered nurse (child or adult) / midwife with current (NMC) registration and relevant post basic neonatal qualification Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Qualification at Master’s level or equivalent education/ clinical experience Experience of working as an ANNP and gained competence in managing all aspects (nursing and medical) of complex intensive care for neonates Demonstrable ability to teach, assess and supervise ANNPs and medical staff 13.
