General Description:
This position will support the Authority in achieving sustainability in the local marine
environment with a particular focus on the collection, storage and use of data for decision
making. As this is a new post, the work programme for the post holder will be developed
by the line manager including annual performance targets. The work programme will be
dependent on the organisational needs and will as a result vary from year to year. As a
member of the marine environment team the post holder will participate in field research
in the marine environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible directly to the Senior Marine Environment Officer for:
 Supporting the Authority in the collation, storage and use of data as may be
required to fulfil the Authority’s marine environmental responsibilities;
 Analysis of data and collation of information and results;
 The maintenance and development of the Authority’s web presence
 Assisting in any aspect of the Authority’s environmental work as directed by line
managers;
 Assisting in the provision of advice and assessment of the implications of all
relevant aspects of European and national environmental policy which may affect
the marine environment;
 Participating in such studies, investigations and monitoring programmes as may be
required to fulfil the Authority’s marine environmental responsibilities;
 Production of information for, and attendance at meetings with other organisations
as directed;
 Promotion of the aims of the Authority and its responsibilities.
The post holder will be expected to be able go to sea as and when required therefore will
be required to hold an ENG1 seafarers medical certificate. Training will be provided where
necessary for the post holder. When at sea the Officer is responsible to the Skipper.

Qualifications
Essential
 Work based knowledge in the subject
area
 Degree 2:1 as a minimum in a relevant
discipline
 GCSE English and Maths Grade C or
above
 UK drivers licence
 Right to work in the UK
Preferred
 Postgraduate degree in a relevant
discipline
 Relevant professional membership
 Understanding of the Marine and
Coastal Access Act 2009.
Skills/Experience
Essential
 Experience in database design,
development and management
 Previous experience of website
management
 Competency in the statistical analysis
of data
 Highly competent in the use of Word,
Excel and Access software

Understanding of records management
procedures
Preferred
 Experience mapping environmental
data
 A sound technical understanding of GIS
and its applications
 Experience of mapping marine spatial
data;
 Previous experience writing
consultation responses
 Previous experience developing
consultation documentation
 Competency in the statistical analysis
of data
 Previous experience working at sea on
research vessels
