For the optimistic and romantic, this is the Beautiful assignment. For the pessimistic and cynical, this is the
Ugly assignment. The goal of this assignment: to “show” not “tell.” You need to paint a word picture for
your reader (minimum of TWO pages, double-spaced).
1. Write a description of the most beautiful or the ugliest thing that you have ever seen (you must pick an
object; person or place…maybe, but NO boyfriends or girlfriends).
2. Your initial purpose is to use your writing to help you observe, discover, and learn about your subject.
Your final purpose will be to show your reader what you have seen and learned. (It helps if you pick
something that you can observe repeatedly.)
