Smith Extends Lead in Breeders’ Cup Victories
Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith , 50, extended his lead for all-time Breeders’ Cup victories with one win to bring his total to 22. His win came in the 14 Hands Winery Breeders’
Cup Juvenile Fillies with Songbird.
Mario Gutierrez won his first Breeders’ Cup race, capturing the Sentient Jet Breeders’
Cup Juvenile aboard Nyquist.
Three Trainers Get First Breeders’ Cup Wins
Three winners of the 13 Breeders’ Cup races over the weekend were greeted by trainers winning their first Championships test, two of them with their first starter.
Winning with their first starters were Maria Borell (Runhappy – TwinSpires Breeders’
Cup Sprint) and Enebish Ganbat (Mongolian Saturday – TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Turf
Sprint). The other first-time winner was Mark Casse (Catch a Glimpse – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
Fillies Turf) on Friday. Casse did not wait long for his second victory as Tepin won the
Breeders’ Cup Mile on Saturday.
The leaderboard for victories among trainers underwent only minor changes. Bob Baffert moved to 12 wins with American Pharoah’s Classic victory. Baffert trails only D. Wayne Lukas
(20).
Aidan O’Brien , one of four trainers with two victories over the weekend, moved into third all-time with 10 victories. O’Brien’s winners were Found (Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf) and Hit It a Bomb (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf).
Other double winners were Todd Pletcher , Chad Brown and Mark Casse .
Pletcher won his races Friday with Liam’s Map (Las Vegas Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile) and
Stopchargingmaria (Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff). Pletcher moved into a three-way tie for fourth all-time with nine victories, a total he shares with Shug McGaughey and Bill Mott .
Chad Brown scored back-to-back victories with Wavell Avenue (TwinSpires Breeders’
Cup Filly & Mare Sprint) and Stephanie’s Kitten (Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf). Brown’s seven career Breeders’ Cup victories rank eighth.
Casse’s victories came with Catch a Glimpse (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf) and
Tepin (Breeders’ Cup Mile).

Back to back for Baffert
Baffert became the second trainer to win back-to-back editions of the Classic, coupling
Saturday’s tour de force by American Pharoah with Bayern’s score in last year’s Classic at Santa
Anita. Jay Robbins was the first trainer to win the Classic in consecutive years, when Tiznow captured the race in 2000 and 2001.
Breeders’ Cup Winners Came From Coast-to-Coast and Europe
The 32 nd
Breeders’ Cup World Championships Friday and Saturday at Keeneland Race
Course lived up to its “world championships” name with the winners of the 13 races worth a total of more than $26 million coming from major racing centers across the United States and
Europe.
The California-based contingent was led by Zayat Stable’s Triple Crown hero American
Pharoah who closed out his brilliant career with a sensational victory in the Classic for trainer
Bob Baffert. Also shipping in from Southern California were the winners of the two main track races for 2-year-olds – J. Paul Reddam’s colt Nyquist in the Sentient Jet Juvenile for trainer
Doug O’Neill and Fox Hill Farm’s filly Songbird in the 14 Hands Winery Juvenile Fillies for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.
New York-based stables did very well, led by trainers Todd Pletcher and Chad Brown with two scores apiece – Pletcher with his pair on Friday – Teresa Viola Racing Stable and West
Point Thoroughbreds’ Liam’s Map
in the Las Vegas Dirt Mile and Town and Country Farms’
Stopchargingmaria in the Longines Distaff. Brown’s double came on Saturday with Michael
Dubb and partners’
Wavell Avenue in the TwinSpires Filly & Mare Sprint and Ken and Sarah
Ramsey’s Stephanie’s Kitten
in the Filly & Mare Turf.
Trainer Mark Casse posted his first Breeders’ Cup victories with one each on Friday and
Saturday after his stable was based for most of the year at Woodbine with divisions at Oaklawn and then Kentucky.
Gary Barber and partners’ Catch a Glimpse captured the Juvenile Fillies Turf after her score in the Natalma Stakes at Woodbine and Robert Masterson’s Tepin beat a strong international field of male rivals in the Mile following a win over the course and distance at
Keeneland in the First Lady Stakes.
The midwest was represented by the home team victory of James McInvale’s Kentuckybased Runhappy in the TwinSpires Sprint for trainer Maria Borell and Mongolia Stable’s
Mongolian Saturday
’s upset tally in the TwinSpires Turf Sprint trainer Enebish Ganbat, who stables most of the season at Arlington Park after wintering at Gulfstream Park in Florida.
Finally, the powerful European team of more than 30 runners from England, Ireland and
France made a good showing, highlighted by the one-two finish of Michael Tabor, Mrs. John
Magnier and Derrick Smith’s 3-year-old filly
Found and Anthony Oppenheimer’s Golden Horn in the Longines Turf.
Irish-based trainer Aidan O’Brien sent out Found Saturday after saddling Mrs. Evelyn
Stockwell’s
Hit It a Bomb to score Friday in the Juvenile Turf to post a double.

The Grand Slam
With his final career triumph yesterday, American Pharoah became the first horse to complete the Thoroughbred racing’s Grand Slam by winning the Kentucky Derby, Preakness,
Belmont Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Classic all in the same year.
Stephanie’s Kitten Joins an Elite Group With Second Breeders’ Cup Win
Four years after her victory in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, 6yo
Stephanie’s Kitten
earned a bigger prize with her victory in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf and a place in
Breeders’ Cup history.
Stephanie’s Kitten is the first Breeders’ Cup winner to earn a second victory more than two years apart. Eighteen horses have come back to win a second time in the Breeders’ Cup.
Fifteen of them were successful the following year. Three won after a gap of one year: Da Hoss
(1996-98), Ouija Board (2004-06, though she was second in 2005); Secret Circle (2011-2013).
Stephanie’s Kitten did not compete in the Breeders’ Cup in 2012 and 2013.
No other Breeders’ Cup winner had returned after missing the event for two years. She failed to complete the double last year, finishing second in the same race.
More Breeders’ Cup World Championship Odds And Ends:
