Tea and Finish Aidan Goggins & Eleni Tsiompanou Members of the Division of Nutritional Sciences of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at The University of Surrey Professor of Primary Care & Clinical Informatics at the University of Surrey Dr Kourosh Ahmadi from the University of Surrey. Appointed as Reader in Nutritional Genomics and Healthy Ageing in 2012, he was previously part of a research team at the Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology Unit, King's College London School of Medicine. His research interests include genetic epidemiology and the role of the B vitamins Topic: Alzheimer’s Disease and the B vitamins etc. Dr Sheldon Cooper is a consultant gastroenterologist at Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley, West Midlands. His special interests include intestinal failure and inflammatory bowel disease, in addition to general gastroenterology, hepatology and endoscopy (including wireless capsule endoscopy and double-balloon endoscopy). He was awarded the MSc Nutritional Medicine in 2010 Topic: Dietary factors in oesophageal adenocarcinoma Dr Michelle Gibbs from University of Surrey. PhD (2005) Lecturer in Public Health Nutrition at the University of Surrey. Michelle’s research interests include childhood nutrition, Nutritional Neuroendocrinology (The consequences of shift work on circadian rhythms and metabolism) and weight management in type 2 diabetes. She has been director of the MSc Nutritional Medicine from 2009. Chair of Saturday meeting Professor Simon de Lusignan is a Guildford GP. He leads the clinical informatics and health outcomes research group, in the Department of Health Care Management and Policy at University of Surrey. He also holds visiting chairs at St. George's - University of London; Brighton and Sussex Medical School; is the Director of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Research and Surveillance Centre (RSC) and editor of the journal “Informatics in Primary Care”. Topic: Research in Primary care Professor Glenn Gibson is Professor of Food Microbial Science at the University of Reading His research interests include: gut disease, autism, obesity, novel prebiotics, and human metabolomics. Specific projects on pro/prebiotics, the molecular genotyping of gut bacteria, H2S production, gastroenteritis in sportspersons, metabolic syndrome, IBS, IBD, gut flora development with age. Topic: Probiotics, prebiotics and controversies Aidan Goggins is a Pharmacist and journalist with a special interest in sports medicine. His book “The Health Delusion” won the best consumer health book prize in 2013 and deals with the dissemination of poor health advice. He also writes for The Huffington Post on health & nutrition. PhD (1988) at University of Aberdeen. Bruce is a teacher of undergraduate dieticians, biochemists & medical students, and postgraduates in clinical biochemistry and nutritional medicine, and is an active researcher in human nutrition in relation to cardiovascular health. Topic: Workshop on coenzyme Q10 heart and health Professor Susan Lanham-New from University of Surrey. PhD (1991) University of Aberdeen. Sue has been head of the Department of Nutrition and Metabolism at the University of Surrey since 2010. She has done extensive research and writing on nutrition and bone health. Other research interests include trace elements and sports medicine. Sue was recently appointed to The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition. Topic: Planning a research project and workshop nutrition and bone health Professor Joe Millward, Emeritus Professor of Human Nutrition at University of Surrey. PhD (1971) from the University of the West Indies DSc (1984) from the University of Wales. Joe’s published research has focused on protein and amino acid metabolism and requirements, energy requirements and many other areas. He has served on national and international expert committees and on the editorial board of many UK and US journals. Topic: Sarcopenia and ageing Bernadette Moore from University of Surrey Bernadette gave us an interesting update talk on zinc in 2010. She studies at the University of Florida getting a PhD in 2002. However, her current research relates to obesity, lipid metabolism and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Topic: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease Dr John Nichols Visiting Research Fellow at The University of Surrey. MRCGP (1974), MSc Nutr. Medicine (2005). Chair of NM Masters Degree Reunion Group. John has done research on measles immunity, trace elements and health, diverticulitis, smoking cessation and probiotics. Chair of Friday meeting Professor Margaret Rayman from University of Surrey. D Phil Inorganic Biochemistry, Somerville College, Oxford. Margaret is the Professor of Nutritional Medicine at the University of Surrey where she founded the highly respected MSc Programme in Nutritional Medicine. Her research includes the nutritional roles of iron selenium and iodine. Topic: Workshop on nutritional status in pregnancy Dr Denise Robertson from University of Surrey. Denise gave us an excellent talk on the influence of dietary fibre and resistant starch beyond the gut in 2010. Her other research interests include the role of insulin resistance in obesity and the metabolic effects of sleep.
