Time Frame: 45 minutes Objectives: Students will practice trash and treasure note-taking skills while understanding the importance not to plagiarize. TEKS: SS.4.22.A Social studies skills. The student applies critical-thinking skills to organize and use information acquired from a variety of sources including electronic technology. The student is expected to differentiate between, locate, and use primary and secondary sources such as computer software; interviews; biographies; oral, print, and visual material; and artifacts to acquire information about the United States and Texas. SS.4.23.D,E Social studies skills. The student communicates in written, oral, and visual forms. The student is expected to: (D) create written and visual material such as journal entries, reports, graphic organizers, outlines, and bibliographies; and (E) use standard grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation. Materials: handouts, pencils, and computers with Internet access Procedures: 1) Discuss the meaning of plagiarism. 2) Demonstrate the Trash n’ Treasure method of note-taking. 3) Pass out handouts and go over the instructions. 4) Show students where to find the handout online if you have made it available. 5) Monitor students’ progress. If enough computers are available have students work individually at the same time. If not the worksheet can be completed during stations/center time. Evaluation: Observation and completeness/correctness of handout.
