Equip Environmental Consideration In Product Design
Year 2005 marks another significant event that recognized Fook Tin’s achievement in environmental
performance. Glass Electronic Bathroom Scale (TX-655) and Glass Electronic Body Fat Bathroom Scale
(TFX-40) marketed under the Terraillon brand name won the “Gold Award of 2005 Hong Kong Eco-Products
Award” of the Business Environment Council.
The Eco-Products Award’s goal is to promote eco-product design to meet the increasing consumer demand
for environmentally sound products and tighter regulations on inefficient, toxic and waste generating products.
“Terraillon” Glass Electronic Bathroom Scale (TX-655)
TX-655 is a glass-platform electronic bathroom scale with 150kg weighing capacity. Compared to a previous
generation product, TX-655 reduces the use of raw (new) materials by 39%. 23% of its materials are
produced from recycled materials.
98% of its materials are recyclable, thus exceeding the
reuse/recycle/recovery target set by the European Union Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic
Equipment. 100% of its packaging materials are recyclable. TX-655 eliminates the use of lead, mercury,
cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PDBB and PBDE according to the European Union RoHS Directive. It is
82% more energy efficient at use. The environmental impact of TX-655 during production, transportation,
use and production/end-of-life waste treatment phases was reduced by 41%, 10%, 85% and 32% respectively.
TX-655 is designed to be entirely repairable and is 100% more durable. The overall life cycle impact
assessment of TX-655 showed a 36% improvement.
“Terraillon” Glass Electronic Body Fat Bathroom Scale (TFX 40)
TFX-40 is a bathroom scale equipped with body fat and body water measuring functions in normal or athlete
mode. It has ten memories to store users’ profile. Compared to a previous generation product, TFX-40
reduces the use of raw (new) materials by 30%. 10% of its materials are produced from recycled materials.
98% of its materials are recyclable, thus exceeding the reuse/recycle/recovery target set by European Union
Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. 100% of its packaging materials are recyclable.
TFX-40 eliminates the use of certain hazardous materials according to the European Union RoHS Directive. It
is 71% more energy efficient at use. The environmental impact of TFX-40 during production, transportation,
use and production/end-of-life waste treatment phases was reduced by 43%, 19%, 50% and 28% respectively.
TFX-40 is designed to be entirely repairable and is 100% more durable. The overall life cycle impact
assessment of TFX-40 showed a 31% improvement.

Improving the raw (new) material usage rate by minimizing material and components usage in products
and increasing the recycled material usage.
Minimizing the disposal of end-of-life products by minimizing material and components usage in

Using biodegradable cardboard rather than polyfoam packaging.

Using industrial and non-industrial wastewater treatment system to maintain effluent discharge within
the legal requirements.
Implementing a comprehensive recycling and supplier take-back program that covers more than 60
kinds of materials.
Effective measure to control air emission to comply with legal requirement.
Effective measure to minimize noise pollution by installing noise abatement devices.
Effective control of energy requirement and consumption.
