For your American Indian project you will:
Write a report with:

your American Indian tribe’s name. Color in where they lived on the map
bibliography (name of the books and/or websites you used)
One paragraph about each of the following topics:
1. clothing (their traditional clothing)
2. food (what they hunted, grew and gathered, if applicable)
3. social organization (how the tribe was organized, who the leaders
were, and the roles of men, women, and children)
4. customs (traditions, beliefs, games)
5. arts and crafts
6. what you found most interesting about your tribe
You must write ONE PARAGRAPH ONLY for each topic. All information should be
based upon the tribe’s original location and traditional life prior to European contact.
For additional copies of these pages, please download the report from the class
website (under “Project Documents”). No additional paper copies will be given.
To make sure students are learning proper time management, there are six
paragraph outlines included in this packet. Two outlines will be due on 12/16
two on 1/9, and two on 1/16. Paragraph outlines may be turned in early. These
outlines do not need to show perfect writing; they are merely an aid to help write
the report and ensure students are not rushing at the last minute. They will be
checked for completion and returned. Additional copies are on the class website
(under “Project Documents”).
Students will spend time researching in the computer lab; however, researching at
home and at the library will be necessary.
Parents, please help with making sure students are writing in their own words, not
copying from the book or website. Please also make sure students do the majority
of the visual project themselves, but they will need some help with construction,
glue guns, etc.
In addition to the written report, you will also complete ONE of the following
three visual projects on the next page.
1. A picture cube of the American Indian tribe that shows:
o The name of the tribe and its location on a map (1 side)
o Their housing (1 side)
o Their clothing (1 side)
o Environment/landforms around them (1 side)
o Their food (1 side)
o Their arts and crafts (1 side)
- The drawings should be detailed. Each side should be labeled. Pictures can be
made using coloring utensils and/or other art materials. Please refrain from too
many photographs.
- The cube should be made with enough reinforcement so it can stand up (for
example, use cardboard so the cube can stand up) and small enough that it can
fit easily on the desk with the report.
OR
2. A picture tri-fold poster presentation of the American Indian tribe that
shows:
o The name of the tribe and their location on a map
o Their housing
o Their clothing
o Environment/landforms around them
o Their food
o Their arts and crafts
- The drawings should be detailed and each section should be labeled. Pictures
can be made using coloring utensils and/or other art materials. Please refrain
from too many photographs.
- Please use a tri-fold poster (available from stores or you can make your own)
that is NO BIGGER THAN 14”x 22”
OR
3. An artifact museum box of the American Indian tribe that has one “artifact” to
represent the following aspects of your tribe:
o Their housing
o Their clothing
o Environment/landforms around them
o Their food
o Their arts and crafts
o There should also be the name of the tribe and their location on a map on the
side of the museum box
- There should be one item to represent each topic (clothing, housing, landforms,
food, arts and crafts) 5 artifacts total. For example, a beaded necklace woud
support the “arts and crafts” section if the tribe made beaded necklaces.
- All items should be put into a box (like a shoebox) with the artifacts inside.
**Examples of materials to use for visual projects: construction paper, toothpicks,
sandpaper, straw, felt, cardboard, clay, pipe cleaners, cotton balls, twigs, etc. (please
no food products). Do not buy American Indian figurines from a craft store.
