Rock View Vets Newsletter April 2015 Veterinary Nurse Training Here, at Rock View vets, we are a training practice for student veterinary nurses, working alongside Duchy College and Plymouth University. This means we have student veterinary nurses working alongside our qualified nurses. There are two training routes to become a Veterinary Nurse, either by a vocational training course or a higher education qualification. Both of these routes lead to the student becoming a registered Veterinary Nurse, RVN and we have students following both routes at Rock View. The vocational training course is called the Level 3 Diploma in veterinary nursing, where the student is in full time employment and attends college one day a week. Students can do this as an apprentice. Brynley and Cody are at different stages of this course. The higher education qualification is called the Degree in veterinary nursing and takes slightly longer for a student to qualify. The student still has a clinical placement in the practice but attends college 2 days a week. We currently have Jenna and Holy studying via this route. Both sets of students have to complete a veterinary nursing log, NPL, which is an online portfolio where they are shown how to do different tasks by their clinical coach and eventually are signed off as competent for each task. A qualified nurse with a clinical coach qualification helps the student complete their NPL. We have Kate and Claire as clinical coaches. There is a lot of work involved with both training routes: they have the demands of the working environment, college attendance, assignments and their NPL. We are all really proud of our students – they are hard working and dedicated.
