Montserrat Azmani Whitnall High School Sudan Combating World Hunger We, the people of Sudan, have strong feelings for combating world hunger. We do not have the power, money, or food to end this epidemic, but we do have the need for this issue to be solved. Since gaining independence from Egypt and the United Kingdom in January of 1956, we have only remained a peaceful country for eleven years. Much of our fighting has come from the power struggle between the north and south. This ultimately has weakened our economy, and sent us into a never ending cycle of poverty. The humanitarian branch of the United Nations works to bring life saving relief to those in need of assistance. They have done an extreme amount of work in southern Sudan, so much that they are slowly decreasing the amount of poverty. They have created a newly renovated part of our country, where there is now place for recovery and new developments. Most of our country was devastated in July of 2007, when we were overcome with extreme flooding. The humanitarian branch provided immediate response, helping to clean up flooding, and repair damages caused by the high waters. As you can see, we are at a very low economic state. Agriculture remains our most important means of survival. Over 80% of our population is employed in this field, and it makes up 39% of GDP. The only downfall to this is the fact that we have been hit with two extremes in the weather. Before the floods of 2007 we had many seasons of drought, this hurt our economy in a devastating way. Then in 2007, all of the crops were diminished and washed away due to the floods. This has left our people without jobs, and hungry. Without having the power, money, or natural resources to provide our people with antiquate nutrition, we feel that combating world hunger would help us to get out of poverty. This issue affects not only us, but a great portion of the world’s population. We, the people of Sudan, support any efforts from other country’s on this issue.
