(4th great grand nephew!) The Horley, Oxfordshire family of Arnold Smith, “Gypsy” & “Mormonite” (1785-1858) Religious conversion to “Mormonism”, division and Emigration. In 1849 five family members were re-baptised into the Mormon Church in: 1 This is the same year that Utah is organised into a US territory under Governor Brigham Young. 6 Nov 1849 Mormon re-baptism of Son Edward aged 31 (Unknown if emigrated) 11 Nov 1849 Mormon re-baptism of Father Arnold aged 60 (died in England) 14 Nov 1849 Mormon re-baptism of Mother Catherine/Charlotte aged 56 (emigrated) 18 Nov 1849 Mormon re-baptism of Son Frederick aged 17 (emigrated) 8 Dec 1849 Mormon re-baptism of daughter Ellen aged 24 (emigrated) And later Mormon baptisms: 1852 Daughter Catherine baptised a Mormon. (emigrated) 1850 or 15/11/1885 Son Oliver (emigrated) This left, to our knowledge, six more family members who did not convert but were baptised after their deaths, and one for whom no such post-mortem baptism can be found. The six non-converts apparently stayed in England, whilst the 5 certain (and one possible) emigrants made a new life in Utah, all beginning after the death of their father in 1858. (4th great grand nephew!) The Horley, Oxfordshire family of Arnold Smith, “Gypsy” & “Mormonite” (1785-1858) AMERICAN EMIGRATIONS 5 Figure 1: Charlotte, picture from Doris Cook. After Arnold’s death in 1858, the Mormon part of the family geared up for emigration, led by the widowed Mother, Charlotte. The photograph of Mother Charlotte at left comes from Doris Smith Cook in the USA. It is a copy of a copy, and Doris says that the originals have not come to hand. It was obviously taken before her death in New York in 1860. It is noticeable that only the five members of the family who were baptised as Mormons during their lifetimes (according to Robert Glen Smith’s family group sheet) seem to have made the journey to the USA. The eight who apparently did not make the journey were apparently baptised after their deaths and therefore we may presume that they never actively joined the church. The older children seem not to have converted, or to have stayed in England – perhaps due to being more settled with lives of their own. The children below their twenties seem to have been more influenced by their parental conversion and were many baptised “en bloc” in 1849. The one exception is Edward – baptised in 1849 – but as yet there is no information to hand that he emigrated. 5 Mostly from Mormon Immigration Index CD Page 7 of 87 – last edited on 16/02/2016 by Kevin Norman. (4th great grand nephew!) The Horley, Oxfordshire family of Arnold Smith, “Gypsy” & “Mormonite” (1785-1858) CHARLOTTE BLAKE – A MYSTERY INHERITANCE In 1904, Charlotte’s son Frederick wrote a letter from Utah trying to claim part of the inheritance of a “General” Blake – details of whom they had seen in various newspaper clippings. He claimed that General Blake was his grandfather, living in Deptford, Surrey, who had married his grandmother, Eleanor Gregory, the family servant, in 1795. They had 2 children – Edward Gregory, born out of wedlock, and his mother, the legitimate Charlotte Blake born about 1798. The General went to serve in India, and the two children were educated in a boarding school in Cambridge. Property specified as the Red Lion Inn, Deptford, a Haberdasher’s, a Cinch Mill, and peppermint distilleries in Deptford were all remembered by the children. On his return, Elinor heard that he had brought an Irish girl back with him and in a rage, retrieved the two children, and went on the run, disguised as a Gypsy with her two children. Some years later, the “general” married a Nellie Sheridan, (the same Irish girl?) and was disinherited by his family. His Mother, Charlotte, married Arnold Smith, and bore 12 children. There are some basic facts that can be checked – and the full letter can be seen below under the entry for Frederick.: Charlotte Blake was baptized St Etheldreda, Horley on 24 Feb 1793 and that her father was Edward Blake.6 1809 she married Arnold Smith at Oxhill. Charlotte, wife of Arnold Smith, died 11 May 1860 in New York City, New York, New York, buried 118 Glenwood Cemetery, New York, New York. Her father is listed above as Edward Blake, and her mother and brother may be these: Burial at Swalcliffe 11/3/1813 Elinor BLAKE aged 42, vagrant, birth place unknown Burial at Hornton 5/5/1864 Edward GREGORY aged 77 (of Neithrop – a village now part of Banbury) 6 Christine Buchanan, professional searcher, discovered in the Parish Register of St. Ethelneda, Horley,Oxfordshire, England, Page 9 of 87 – last edited on 16/02/2016 by Kevin Norman. Mr Smith says: that General Edward Blake 46 was his grandfather and of this: there can be no doubt, and that the property that is now in Chancery justly belongs to himself and others of: his family. When I read the clipping and found that the General had been in the British service in India and also that' the Mr J. D, B. Gribble named in the clipping had been in the Indian civil service, your name at once suggested itself to me, and I felt that you might be in a position to assist me either by taking hold of the matter yourself or placing it in the hands of some competent and reliable lawyer whom you may know to look up the facts and make the claim for the money in behalf of my clients. Unfortunately my clients have no money to advance, but all who assist in the matter Of securing: the money will be well paid for their trouble and expense when the government: recognizes their rights and turns the money over. Mr Frederick Smith makes the following statement in support of his claim to the estate of General Edward Blake: "I was born at Horley, Oxfordshire, England August 12th, 1832. My father's name was Arnold Smith, my mother's Charlottie Blake Smith. My grandfather on my mother's side was Edward Blake, a non-commissioned officer in the: British army, known as General Edward Blake. He was a gentleman of independent means an and lived in Deadford, Surrey, England. He married my grandmother, Ellen (or Helen) Gregory who was a servant in the family, about 1795. She bore him two children, a boy Edward and my mother, Charlottie. My Uncle Edward was born out of wedlock, but my mother's birth was legitimate. 'My mother was born in Deadford about 1798. My grandfather, General Blake went to India, and just after his return to England, when he received his discharge from the government, my grandmother, his wife was falsely, I believe, informed that he intended to discard her for an Irish girl whom he brought from India. In a jealous rage, my grandmother went directly to Cambridge where her two children, my mother and Uncle were being educated and taking the children away from the boarding school there, disguised herself as a gypsy and wandered about the country to evade the efforts that were made by my grandfather and his family to find her and restore her and their children to their home in Deadford. Some years after the disappearance of my grandmother and her children, my grandfather believed his wife to be dead; married an Irish lady named, I believe, Nellie Sheradin, for which marriage he was disinherited a's I am informed, by his family. My grandmother lived for some time after his marriage, but she continued to carefully conceal her identity. Becoming used to her nomadic life my mother, Charlotte Blake was married to my fathers Arnold Smith, in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England. Of this union twelve children were born, only three of whom, including myself are now alive, and we all reside in Utah, USA. My father died in Horley, Oxfordshire in 1857 and my mother and a number of her children emigrated to America in 1860, And she died in New York City May 11, 1860, eleven days after landing there from England. She was buried at 1118 Glenwood Cemetery, New York. Her mother, Ellen Gregory Blake had informed her fully as to her family and as to the property should of right descend to her and her children. Indeed but for fear on the part of my father that her family would take her away from him, she, my mother would have gone to see her father before he died and made known to him her identity. The statements I now make were repeatedly told by my mother to myself and my brothers and sisters up to the day of her death in New York City and she always sought to impress upon our minds that we would some day 46 Edward Blunkett Blake – according to Sawtell@aol.com - Sandy Brown - E Mail in August 2001 Page 75 of 87 – last edited on 16/02/2016 by Kevin Norman.
