Specific CEU
Missiondriven
1. Inter/ multi/ disciplinarity
Nationalism as a field of study is
inherently inter- and multidisciplinary.
Our courses are designed to teach
students what the various distinct
disciplines have to say about
nationalism with special attention to
„borderline studies”, meaning studies
that themselves use a
multidisciplinary approach (such as
studies combining international law
and political science approaches,
sociology and anthropology
approaches, history and sociology
approaches, philosophy and political
science approaches.
The overall curriculum of the program
is the other means to realize our
interdisciplinarity. The courses we
announce have been selected to
represent the best intentions
scholarship on nationalism in the
various disciplines (law, philosophy,
sociology, policy, history,
anthropology).
While our students are requested to
use a consistent methodology in their
research and writing, they are also
encouraged to use the results of the
various disciplines in an innovative
fashion.

2. Policy-relevance or ‘what
follows?’
With the reconfiguration of the states,
borders and nations of the East
Central European region barely two
decades ago questions of nationhood,
national identity, supranational
integration, minority protection, ethnic
movements, nationalist extremism
have emerged as central problems of
the region, with some parallel
phenomena observable on the entire
continent of Europe and beyond. Our
program takes account of these
developments in its curriculum and
makes available to the students the
scholarship produced in this field.
Some of our faculty are directly
addressing relevant policy issues in
their prominent publications, e. g.
Will Kymlicka in Can liberal
pluralism be exported? Western
political theory and ethnic relations in
Eastern Europe, Maria Kovacs and
Andras Kovacs on dual citizenship,
Andras Kovacs on NATO, Tibor
Varady and Florian Bieber on the
expressions of ethnic identity in
institution building, Julia Szalai and
Michael Stewart on dilemmas of
poverty and ethnicity with regard to
the Roma population and Michael
Miller and Andras Kovacs in their
studies on antisemitism in Eastern
Europe.
Beyond the relevant scholarship,
graduates of the program will exit
with a firm knowledge in the political,
legal and institutional frameworks
available for dealing with issues of
ethnic relations and minority
protection.

3. Scholars for the region
4. Leaders for the region
To train future scholars and educators
in the East European/FSU region in
issues of nationalism in a critical,
theoretically sophisticated, nonpartisan, and interdisciplinary fashion
and to encourage them to develop
comparative, collaborative approaches
that will help sharpen their intellectual
sensitivity to issues they will likely be
confronting in the future both in their
academic as well as public capacity.
