6.5.1
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (ENERGY ENGINEERING)
Entry Requirements
i.
A candidate pursuing the B.Sc (Energy Engineering) degree programme must meet the
minimum entry requirements for the School of Engineering and Technology.
ii.
The candidate must have attained the following minimum grades at KSCE or equivalent
qualifications: Mathematics(B+), Physics (B+), Chemistry(B), English(B)
iii.
Mean Grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or equivalent with Higher Diploma of credit pass in
relevant field of study from a recognized institution.
Examinations
Common University regulations concerning evaluation shall apply. Design units to be assessed
by continuous assessment tests 40% and design projects 60%. For non design units the final
examination will constitute 70% of the total marks while lab work, continuous assessment tests
and assignments will constitute 30%. The pass mark for each course shall be 40%.Assessment of
practical attachment shall be based on student’s log-book, report and supervisor’s evaluation
report. It shall be graded as pass or fail.
Supplementary Examinations
Any examination in a unit taken by a candidate as a result of failing the unit at the first attempt is
a supplementary examination.Supplementary examination period shall normally be at the end of
a year of study in which the unit is offered.A candidate who fails in any unit, up to a maximum
of four units per semester at the ordinary examination shall be required to sit supplementary
examinations in all the failed units during the supplementary period immediately following
the ordinary examinations in which he/she failed the units. A candidate who fails more than
half the units taken in any semester shall be required to repeat the academic year and served
with an academic warning by the Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology upon
recommendation by the University Board of Examination.A candidate who fails a unit at the
supplementary examination period shall be required to re-sit the examination during the next
time the unit is offered at the ordinary examinations.A candidate who fails a supplementary
examination of any year of study during the supplementary examination period shall not be
allowed to proceed to the next year of study but shall be required to re-sit the examination during
the next time the unit is offered at the ordinary examinations
Special Examinations
If through unavoidable circumstances such as bereavement or sickness a candidate is unable to
sit for one or more examination papers, or is unable to undertake essential parts of the work
for continuous assessment the candidate may, on the recommendation of the School Board of
Examiners, and with the approval of Senate, be permitted to take special examination or undertake
extra work for continuous assessment. Special examinations shall not be allowed for students
sitting for supplementary Examinations.
Discontinuation
A candidate who does not pass a unit after a total of three attempts shall be discontinued. In
this case the three attempts shall normally be as follows: First attempt shall be at ordinary
examinations.Second attempt shall be at supplementary examinations period following failure
at the ordinary examinations. Third attempt will be following failure at second supplementary
examinations which will be taken at the ordinary examination period.A candidate who fails more
than half of the units of a year of study after the first attempt and subsequently fails the same units
after re-sitting the examinations shall be discontinued.
A candidate who fails to complete the first and second years of study in three academic years shall
be discontinued. A candidate who fails to complete the third, fourth and fifth years of study in
five academic years shall be discontinued.
Certification
To qualify for the award of the degree, the candidate should have successfully completed a
minimum of 80 units of which 68 are compulsory and 12 are electives.
