Computer Lab Policy for Individual Use

The Lab is equipped with 15 computer workstations and one instructor workstation (laptop with projection capabilities). The Reference Department Head is responsible for supervision and management of the Lab. All persons using the Lab must abide by the Fairhope Public Library Computer

and Internet Use Policy. There is a paper copy of the policy in a binder in the Lab, and each Lab computer has a copy of the policy on the computer desktop.

Inquiries regarding the Computer Lab availability will be answered at the Reference Desk, or by telephone at 251-929-1464 or 251-990-0146.

AVAILABILITY

The Lab is used primarily for staff and patron computer training. The Library offers classes to the public in basic computing skills, introduction to the Internet, job searching, resume writing, genealogy and Ancestry.com, and some Windows-based software.

Outside groups wishing to reserve the Lab must file an application with the

Reference/Technology Manager. Please refer to the Fairhope Public Library Computer Lab

Policy for Group Use.

Individual patrons may use the Lab for:

Online Computer Training

Online Classes/Tests

Resumes/Job Applications

Scholarly projects requiring extended time

Business Plan Pro

Key Train Certificates

Learn-a-Test Programs

Individual Online Income Tax Preparation

Individuals may also schedule exam proctoring. A fee of $25 per exam is charged and must be paid in advance.

LAB USE RULES

All persons using the Lab must abide by the Fairhope Public Library Computer and Internet Use

Policy.

The Lab is locked when not in use for training or maintenance. All individual patrons must sign in and out at the Reference Desk in order to use the Lab. Patrons must show a valid library card from a Baldwin County library or a driver’s license before accessing the Lab. All Baldwin County residents must obtain a library card in order to use the Lab more than once.

Youth under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, who must sit next to the child in the Lab at all times.

 Individual patrons should use the front row of computers. Patrons who require assistance from the reference staff should use the public computers near the Reference desk instead of the Lab.

 The Library Staff may enter the Lab at any time.

 Approval of the use of the facilities in no way constitutes Library endorsement of the policies or beliefs of anyone using the Computer Lab.

 Respect must be shown to other users in the rooms - noise and conversation must be kept to a minimum. The Computer Lab is not to be used as a social gathering place.

Do not use any malfunctioning or damaged equipment. Report problems with equipment to the

Reference/Information Desk staff immediately.

Do not touch the instructor laptop or projector remote control.

Absolutely no food or drink is allowed in the Computer Lab.

Patrons may use the preinstalled software on the computers. Installation of other software on

Lab computers is not permitted.

Work may be saved temporarily on the hard drive. However, all work will be deleted at the close of the day so patrons should plan to save work to their own USB drive or CD.

Personal headphones may be connected to the computers. Attachment of any additional peripheral equipment requires prior permission from the Reference staff.

Individuals must leave the Lab prior to scheduled classes and proctored exams.

 The Lab is available only during the Library’s open hours and closes 15 minutes before the

Library’s closing time.

 Lab users are responsible for cleaning up after themselves and putting things in order. The

Library is not responsible for any personal items left in the Lab.

 If a user violates any Library or Computer Lab policy the Library reserves the right to cancel and/or suspend use of the Computer Lab by that user.

PRINTING

Documents may be printed at a cost of $0.20/page for black & white printouts and $0.50/page for color. Print jobs must be paid for at the Reference Desk upon signing out.

SOFTWARE

Microsoft Office Suite 2010/2011 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Publisher) is available on all

Lab computers. Links to LearningExpress and other e-learning tutorials are also listed on the desktop.
