JOB SPECIFICATION Education and Care Mentor (ECM)
Beacon Reach adopts safe recruitment and selection procedures.
Beacon Reach is dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
and expects all employees to share this commitment.
All employees are CRB checked at Enhanced level.
All members of staff (both teaching and non-teaching) may act as Education and Care Mentors under
the immediate direction of Senior Supervising Staff (Registered Provider/Registered Manager/Head of
Education/Team Leader).
Any Education and Care Mentor shall carry out the duties listed below:

PURPOSE OF POST
 To work under the guidance/instructions of designated teacher/senior staff to
undertake care/support programmes to enable young people to access education and
life skills within the care of home and school

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES
A) General Care and Support
 Establish a rapport and respectful trusting relationships with young people, acting as at
role model and setting high expectations.
 Safeguarding health and well-being of a young person by providing a safe, secure and
stimulating environment.
 Provide positive and consistent levels of care
 Promote self-esteem and independence amongst the young people
 Sleeping in as required

B) Education & Learning Support







Assist in the education and social development of the young people under the direction
of the class teachers and Head of Education.
Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Programmes for young people and
help monitor their progress.
Provide support for individual young people in learning environments inside and outside
and during snack, meal and break times to enable them to fully participate in activities.
Work with other professionals (e.g Speech and Language Therapists) as necessary.
Assist with class teachers with maintaining young peoples’ work.
Prepare and present displays of young peoples’ work.
Support class teachers in tasks such as preparation of an activity, photocopying and
clearing an activity in order to support teaching.
C) Clubs and Activities
To provide on a regular basis, at least one planned appropriate club/leisure activity which can be
incorporated into a suitable programme for young people (e.g twice a week).
D) Assessment and Reports
Providing and contributing to oral and written assessments, reports, profiles and reviews,
relating to individual young people and groups of young people.
E) Key Listener
Collating reports and internal reviews on a group of young people and acting as guide and
mentor to members of that group on arrival at the school/home and as directed by the
REGISTERED MANAGER/HEAD OF EDUCATION.
F) Cover
Supervising and providing activities for young people when an Education and Care Mentor is
absent.
G) Meetings
Attend team and staff meetings.
Attend meetings for young people.
H) Safeguarding Buildings, Equipment and Facilities
Whenever and ECM is working in an area of the school/home, he/she must ensure that:
 The fabric of the building is safeguarded and maintained to a high standard
 Equipment is used properly, stored neatly and efficiently and maintained to a high
standard

PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT AND TRAINING





Equipment is kept clean and high standards of hygiene are demonstrated
All defects are reported IMMEDIATELY
Participate in the arrangements of Beacon Reach Limited policies for the management
of his/her performance and that of other Education and Care Mentors.
Review from time to time his/her methods of care and support and programmes of
activities.
Participate in arrangements for his/her future training and continued professional
development as Education and Care Mentor.
Participate in the identification of areas in which he/she would benefit from further
training and undergo such training as directed by the Team Leader.
RESIDENCE
Education and Care Mentor in residence will conform to the “Regulations Concerning the Use of Staff
Accommodation and Sleeping-in”. Animals may not be kept.
