MALBORK PROJECT DESCRIPTION PROJECT NAME: Rescue for the European Cultural Heritage ADMINISTRATION: the City of Malbork/ Malbork City Hall/ POLAND CONTACT PERSON: Ewelina Bonar Malbork City Hall, Poland bps@um.malbork.pl fax. +48-55-647-33-24 DURATION OF THE PROJECT: PARTNERS: 3 years we search co-organisers to the Cultura 2000 Programme BACKGROUND: Malbork former seat of the Teutonic Knights' Order and Europe's largest Gothic fortress - nowdays 40 thousand citizens. The castle and its museum are entered onto the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. It is sometimes referred to as 'the largest heap of bricks north of the Alps." Malbork is majestic, austere and beautiful, in particular when the sun sets on the Nogat River, lighting the castle walls with warm light. This 13th-century seat of the Teutonic Knights' Order was moved here from far-away Venice. If you look for adventure, take a tour through the Middle Ages and enjoy your night sightseeing of the castle. When you step on the drawbridge, imagine that you are a guest in the medieval retinue. In the castle rooms, you can feast at tables groaning with food and liquors with the accompaniment of Capella All Antico. You will never forget our excellent balls and regales. You will not only learn the atmosphere of Teutonic Knights' simple life but you will also see unique attractions, e.g. Europe's first central heating system. We also boast of our unique amber collection. But Malbork is not only the castle. The areas adjoining the castle – the walls and the areas along them – are an element of this zone with special significance as an additional interesting tourist attraction. This area is especially liked by local residents and tourists as somewhere to walk in the vicinity of the castle. The present state of the walls means that they require repairs every year, and these repairs do not bring permanent results. In many places fragments of the walls constitute a real danger to walkers.
