Albert Edward FRARY born Trunch 1888 and lived in Wright’s Loke, in 1911 was in
Askern & Sutton near Doncaster in Yorkshire, living in hut 8, of 8 with about 20 others,
working as a labourer in a colliery. He was one of the first workers in this colliery.
Askern was once a spa town Then in the early years of the 20th century the quest for coal
identified a good seam of coal near Askern. It was decided to access the coal from a mine
built above the village, and with the mine came the people to build it. As the mine opened
in 1911 the new village was built to house the workers and their families. This new
population was at odds with the well-to-do visitors. As the First World War started, the
death knell was sounded for Askern Spa and the spa visitors declined to no more than a
few regulars.
Once again Askern changed direction and became a thriving pit village, which welcomed
people from all over the country to work and live in the area, giving the town a mixed
background. The mine's coal was regarded as highest quality, and the opening of the
Coalite works confirmed Askern as a place of high employment and a pleasant
environment to live in. This however changed as the Coalite plant pushed more smoke
and fumes into the atmosphere.

The Lancashire cotton industry was at the height of a boom in 1860, with profits reaching 30% to
40% of capital invested, production higher than ever before and labour sought after. Some cotton
districts were advertising for and securing workers from Norfolk and other distant counties. The
boom was continuing early in 1861, but then prices of raw materials began to rise as markets for
manufactured goods contracted.
John GREENHILL born Ashford Kent 1830, married Sophia Primrose born Trunch

Suffolk, London, Kent and Lancashire
John HALL born Trunch 1886 In 1901 was in the Ratcliff Boys Home in Stepney

boarder but he was 19 and John was only 15. It looks as though it was a Dr Barnardo’s
Home where children were taught technical skills. (see link below) I haven’t found out
what happened to John afterwards although there is a Victor John Hall from Norwich in
the Salvation Army Hostel in the Mile End Road London in 1911 working as a Post
Office Linesman.

Eliza MARTINS born in Trunch in 1850 to James Martin, the blacksmith
and his wife Jane, nee Gibbons. In early 1871 she was a servant in
Hampstead, London and in late 1871 she married John Pigney, a carpenter,
in London. They went on to have 7 children, but by 1891 Eliza was a widow
working as a char woman in Fulham, London. She died aged 90, in
Edmonton, London in 1840. Moving to work as house servants was quite
common in the 19th. Century and several women in service in Trunch had
come from outside the village.
Emma MARTINS born Trunch 1841 in St Pancras London in 1871 in James Primroses’
house down as a visitor occupation - cook.
1881 Emma Martin 37 invalid from Norfolk in Marylebone new hospital for women
Robert Martin MARTINS born Trunch 1842 moved to East Ardsley in
Yorkshire and worked there as a carpenter in the Blast Furnace (opened
1868) from 1871 - 1911. He was there when this tragedy occurred.
On Friday, August 28, 1908 the villagers of East Ardsley were in mourning.
Just before 10am at the village's iron works, five men died and 13 were injured when the
bell of the number one furnace exploded and fell onto the engine house, resulting in hot
iron raining down on the workmen.
Two local men, David Nicholson and William Keenan, were killed instantly
The explosion caused a stream of molten metal to pour down in front of the furnace,
seriously injuring a number of men.
They scarcely had any warning and it seemed too late to reach safety, their only means of
escape was to crawl on hand and knees over the red hot coke and ironstone.
Ambulance men from the Great Northern Railway depot close by were quickly at the
scene and the injured were taken by train to Leeds Infirmary.
An account given by those first at the scene said that William Keenan must have realised
that an explosion was inevitable as he was discovered with his arms still shielding his
face. David Nicholson's injuries were so severe that his body could only be identified by a
new pair of boots he was wearing.
The injured Arthur Tyldesley said that just before the explosion he had left one of the
furnaces and was in the number one weigh cabin when he heard a "terrific crack". He
looked out and a lump of something red hot hit him on the head, splitting it open.
He said: "There was coke and metal flying around everywhere. On my hands and knees I
crawled over the red hot metal and took shelter under a coke wagon."
The inquest into the deaths of Mr Nicholson and Mr Keenan was opened two days later
by county coroner, Mr P Maitland, at the Great Northern Railway Hotel in the village.
During the inquest, the works' assistant manager Mr Thomas Hoskinson gave a
demonstration of how the furnace worked, explaining to the jury that the number one
furnace, where the blast occurred, was 75ft high and was filled with material-lime,
ironstone and coke.
He said that the furnaces were liable to explode when there was a mixture of gas and air
and the 'bell' kept out the air. But if the material was to fall suddenly then some of the air
could escape into the upper part of the furnace without being converted into gas.
"That's the only cause which is likely to produce an explosion," he said, adding that the
furnace, built in 1902, was relatively new and the men had never complained about its
workings.
An expert theory, given by Mr A S Keith, assistant works manager at the Leeds Steel
Works, said: "The cause of the explosion was due to the taking off of the blast to 'check'
the furnace, which caused a slight vacuum and therefore reversed the action of gases.
Because of this an explosion takes place."
He added that more than 200 tonnes of material must have been blown out.
The jury took just 20 minutes to reach a verdict that: "The two men were killed by shock
by an accidental explosion at the furnace."
Another inquest was held afterwards following the deaths of Alfred Warren, George
Billings and Fred Paver, at Leeds Infirmary. The same verdict was recorded.
Just two days after the explosion, East Ardsley was a scene of mourning when crowds of
sympathisers packed out the village for the funerals of David Nicholson and William
Keenan. It was seen as appropriate that the men should be laid to rest side-by-side.

WEGGS
The Weggs are a real Trunch family with most born in the village but they did travel. In
1911 four girls - sisters I think were all working as servants in Hampstead in London.
Several other members of the family died in far away counties so they obviously moved
away after 1911.
Florence WILLEY born Trunch 1889 was working as a domestic servant in
Finchley in 1901.
