ST. CHARLES BORROMEO CHURCH SUNDAY, MAY 1, 2011 SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER VOLUME 36 - NUMBER 18 _______________________________________________________________ PASTOR’S CORNER There are several events taking place this Sunday: First Holy Communion, Divine Mercy Sunday, May devotion begins today and the Beatification of His Holiness Pope John Paul II. Congratulations St. Charles Borromeo First Communicants Today is a grace filled morning for the eighteen children who will receive Jesus for the first time, as well as for their parents, teachers, friends, brothers and sisters of our Church Parish Family. To the first communicants: May the Risen Christ stay in your hearts and bless you every day and night. Keep your hearts pure, and welcome Jesus when He comes. May you receive a lot of blessings and graces today and for the rest of your life. May this relationship with Jesus grow with you so you may have a very good and beautiful life. I am happy to thank you, dear parents, for bringing your children to Jesus. Be supportive of them. We all belong to Christ and should desire to serve Him well. Divine Mercy Sunday: Jesus promised that those who go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of Divine Mercy will receive not only forgiveness of their sins, but the total remission of all temporal punishment for their sins. It is like a second baptism, all sin and punishment is wiped out. Confession during the week beforehand is also acceptable. Our attitude should be one of total trust in Jesus’ Divine Mercy. Going to confession is not the only way to prepare ourselves for this feast. We are also to be merciful and to perform acts of mercy. This Feast of Divine Mercy reminds us of many parables taught by Jesus emphasizing God’s mercy. We remember the three beautiful parables of Luke 15. God is like a shepherd who leaves 99 sheep to go in search of the one lost one. God is like a woman who searches the entire house to find the coin she lost. God is like a father who comes out of the house to welcome back his prodigal son and who comes out of the house a second time to entice the elder son to come in and join in the party. On the Feast of Divine Mercy, God throws a party during which we can receive His infinite mercy. Let us go to the party to receive it. There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 2:00 P.M. (Please note: Confessions will not be heard at this time), and the Recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3:00 P.M. Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate in this powerful devotion. May Devotion: Blessed Virgin Mary: Two months of the year are dedicated to the Holy Mother: May and October (the Feast of the Holy Rosary). May is popular because the Blessed Virgin Mary is venerated to counteract infidelity and immorality. The entire month of May is devoted to the Blessed Virgin: flower altars are put up, pilgrimages are made or May devotions attended. The May devotion in its present form originated in Rome. From Rome the practice spread to the other Jesuit colleges and thence to nearly every Catholic church. This practice is the oldest instance of a devotion extending over an entire month. Let us have a filial devotion to our blessed Mother during this month. Beatification of His Holiness Pope John Paul II: Pope John Paul II will be beatified this Sunday in Rome. It is one of the biggest events since the death of His Holiness in April 2005. Beatification is the next-to-last step in the sainthood process. It means the candidate can be referred to as “blessed,” and that one miracle has been confirmed in his or her name. Another miracle is required for canonization, the formal act of declaring someone a saint. In 2001 a 49 year old French nun Sister Marie Simon-Pierre Normand was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Her religious community prayed to John Paul II after his death. After writing the late pope’s name on a piece of paper one night, Sister Marie-Simone reportedly awoke the next morning cured and was able to resume her work as a maternity nurse. This is considered to be a miracle through the intercession of John Paul II. The faithful, especially those who have Parkinson’s disease, can seek the intercession of Blessed John Paul II. Fr. The Catholic Home Missions appeal supports these dioceses by funding essential ministries, including aid to vulnerable parishes. Please be generous in this Appeal and help strengthen the Church at home. Only one basket will be passed.
